Coloring Tutorial #1

From this:
to this:

Program: Gimp 2.6
Difficulty: Easy
Translatable: Yes
PSD: I'll make one if anyone'll ask for it.

1. Open a picture in Gimp and crop it. Don't sharpen yet.

2. New from visible and while on this layer go to Colors>Automatic>White balance (My Gimp is in Hebrew, so I'm not sure if it's the same. Don't be afraid to ask, though.) Set this layer to Normal @ 20. This is to give the skin a tinge of depth and clarity.

3. New from visible. Fillters>Enhance>Unsharp mask.
Amount: 0.16
Radius: 120
While on the same layer go to Fillters>Enhance>Sharpen @ 10 precent. I prefer sharpening like this, I find it much more accurate.

4. New from visible. Fillters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Don't change any of the default settings. Put this layer on Soft Light @ 20 precent. This is to soften Hayley's face.

5. New from visible. Go to Colors>Levels and put in these settings:
RGB -
Input: 33, 1.27, 245
Output: 38, 246
Red -
Input: 18, 1.50, 237
Output: 21, 226
Green -
Input: 33, 1.25, 255
Output: 21, 237
Blue -
Input: 25, 1.30, 229
Output: 47, 202
Put this layer to Normal @ 50 percent.
This gives the image a bit of pink and softens the orange.

6. New from visible. Go to Colors>Components>Channel Mixer and put in the following settings:
Red: 176.3, 1.5, 34.1
Green: -25.2, 114.1, 60.7
Blue: -22.2, -4.4. 105.2
Make sure Preserve Luminosity is checked. Click okay and set this layer to Normal @ 20 precent. This is just to make the reds a little brighter, but not overdo it.

7. New from visible. Go to Levels again and put in these settings:
RGB -
Input: 40, 1.15, 239
Output: 37, 229
Red -
Input: 30, 1.36, 239
Output: 24, 238
Green -
Input: 14, 1.06, 244
Output: 17, 234
Blue -
Input: 30, 0.92, 226
Output: 28, 239
Set this layer to Normal @ 50 percent.
This is to make the oranges a tad more brighter. I feel like this image will look great with a vivid coloring.

8. Duplicate your base and bring it to the top then set it to Soft Light @ 40 percent.

9. New from visible. Set this layer to Screen @ 20 percent, just to brighten the image a bit.

10. Take this texture
by miss_snoopy25 and set it to Soft Light @ 50 percent. I added this texture because I wanted to make Hayley's hair pop without making it seem radioactive.

11. Now this texture
also by miss_snoopy25 and set this to Soft Light @ 50 as well. This brings the focus to Hayley's face.

12. Take this texture
and set it to Lighten Only @ 50 percent. This is beacuse I think it gives a nice touch to the icon, washes out the background a bit.

13. Duplicate your base, bring it to the top and to Normal @ 20 percent. I thought Hayley's face were a little too bright, this is to darken her face and keep some of the image original luminosity.

And that's it. Of course you may play a little with the settings to fit your image better and add textures/brushes/text/ext.

I would love to see what you come up with! :)
