Anthroponymic Study: "Edward" means "Weird"?

Jun 20, 2008 14:06

Knee-deep in the research and planning stages of the fantasy trilogy that I am going to write (likely in the very distant future), I have found myself extraordinarily interested by the meanings of names (both given and surnames) and their origins. This fondness is not uncommon in people of literary and artistic bent, so I thought I would share an ( Read more... )

Truth that demonstrates how a character does not need an extraordinary name to leave an extraordinary impression. ^_-
And maybe having an ordinary name is incentive enough to drive one to become extraordinary?

I can't recall the family name of Narnia's Edward, but I do recall that he was branded the "traitor" of the group~. Special lads. The lot. Can't think of any other Edwards (rl, historical or fictive) of the top of my head, but I'm sure some of the British Kings apply.

Umm... the "Edward" in Narnia is actually an "Edmund." Edmund Pevensie. It is close, but not quite.

(Just had to say. I'm a big Narnia buff, since I was like 6. Long before the movies. Have the books, seen the BBC version, even been in a play version of LLW. Yeah.)

And you are totally right: ordinary names do seem to inspire people to prove that they are not quite as boring as their monikers are. My real name is not bad but it's not special, and yet, I still am aiming to see it written on a bestseller someday. And then there are those people who change their boring names to weird words, or change the spelling to something more mystical, or only use one name (am thinking of people in the entertainment industry). O_O It's mindboggling! ^_^

*facepalm* Obviously I need to revisit my classics. XD;
(And how -does- one pronounce Pevensie already?)

And I agree, it is quite fascinating. I think there's some celebrity called "Jordan" in the UK, took me a while to figure out that it was just "Jordan" and not just some 'everyone should know who Jordan is' thing. Didn't help that "Jordan" was a she and I grew up across the street from a boy with the same name. XD

Tom Marvollo Riddle, eh? ^____-
