I'm also not sure about sweet or innocent. "Sweet" I tend to associate more with Simon. There is quite a bit of innocence in those early episodes where he still thinks if he can get the evidence to the right authorities, somebody will Do Something.

He's "Mr. Teller" instead of "Dr. Teller" in Marshall's Theory... and it's possible he stopped after finishing "Matter: What Is It Exactly" as his master's thesis.
But he is also very much a scientist there, which makes me wonder if they did have a different career path in mind in this draft.
