Written for Day 25 of the
31_days June challenge. The prompt was, "all around her, the world is burning"
Mary C. Carter awoke to find her bedroom wreathed in flames. She rolled onto her back and stared up at the ceiling, trying to recapture the dream she had been having a moment ago. A soft summer breeze made the white net curtains flutter in the morning sunlight, and the warm air coming in from the half-open window filled the room with the smell of green and growing things.
Marisea shifted under her warm-weather eiderdown, seeking and finding a cool patch of mattress. The coverlet was a pale pastel pink, and when she pulled it over her head, the ghost-fire shone through the thin layer of downy fluff, and turned the world about her to rosy-gold. She sighed, pushed back her bedclothes, and stumbled downstairs to see what was the matter.
The ground floor was an inferno. In her neat, cheerful kitchen, a palimpsest of burnt and blackened worktops flickered over the reality of well-worn white goods and a small fold-out breakfast table. Marisea yawned hugely as she searched the cabinet for her favourite glass - the one with strawberry plants painted around the rim - and poured herself some orange juice from a refrigerator that was partially hidden by a wall of black smoke.
She sat on one of the cheap fold-out chairs and set her juice carefully on the uneven surface of the camping table before her. Rubbing sleep out of her eyes, she leaned forward, her elbows propped on her knees. A spectre of blackened flesh and charred bone hung in the air before her, wailing it's loss.
Marisea took the lid off the little sugar bowl that sat in the middle of an ectoplasm-stained lace doily and pushed it towards the unhappy ghost. Inside were individually-wrapped pieces of spirit gum, handmade ecoplasm jellies, and small cubes of the sort of artificial sweetener that no living creature should ever eat. People on the other side of the Veil loved them.
"Okay," said Marisea, making her tone as gentle as possible. "Suppose you tell me what this is about."
