Frivolous Design Poll No. 2

Feb 22, 2007 13:20

Thanks to all who answered the first poll. Just in case you were wondering, I was interested in what you all thought not because these were the rooms of my dreams, but because they were all done by a specific designer who I have heard described as "wonderfully talented" ... and every one of those rooms is in the home of a very wealthy individual ( Read more... )

Shhhh ... I like IKEA, too.

Asian and Arts and Crafts have a lot in common, because Arts and Crafts drew a lot on Asian values. I like both of them a lot, because they are so simple and clean, but evidencing strong design. Things are beautiful and useful.

From what I've seen, there's now a "modern country" which is kind of like Old World, only instead of being European farmhouse, t's American farmhouse. I kind of like that aesthetic, too, because it's spare and less cluttered than a typical, traditional country style.

This sophistication has come upon me as I've matured. When I was younger, I had a big weakness for cottage style that is still with me to a lesser extent.

One of the obvious takes from Asian style in Arts in Crafts are white or neutral walls with showing wood work, which is something that traditional Japanese houses do.

There are very few people who come down solidly in one and ONLY one style, (though I have met a few). Styles evolve and borrow from each other, after all, so there are similarities. Take for example modern and contemporary -- I don't know if I could correctly differentiate between those two in room that wasn't already labelled.

Until I started looking on the HGTV website, I had never heard of "transitional," but those turned out to be among my favorite rooms.

I do not think it means what you think it means...

I picked a few that I could live with, but I'm not spastic over any of those pictures. They always seem to include some fugly-ass furniture or decor.

I got most of the pictures from the HGTV website, and that's what they were calling it. I think it's supposed to be sort of a cross between Old World and Mediterranean, (which was another category, but was so varied I didn't think I could properly represent it with two pictures). Feel free to write them a nasty letter.

You're a picky bitch, but then we already knew that.

The first batch of pictures made me go yuck across the board.

I like arts and crafts architecture, and I like Amish furniture a lot. I think the two styles mesh very well.

My dining set consists of the Heritage table (which opens up with two leaves to sit 8 comfortably, 10 in an emergency) and the Century arm and side chairs here: http://www.borkholder.com/furn/index.htm

When I have a bigger place (hopefully an Arts & Crafts bungalow in the next few years) I plan to go back and purchase a few more pieces from Borkholder.

I know. Someday I'd like to keep my Mennonites in one.

It didn't occur to me to pick more than one! I picked Arts and Crafts, although I tend to like English Arts and Crafts more than American Arts and Crafts, which I think is more like a cross between what current design mags are calling "Cottage" and "Arts and Crafts." Of course, I like some of the American A&C and Mission A&C as well, I wouldn't pass up an original Stickley, for heaven's sake. On the other hand, I wouldn't pay those prices for a Stickley repro, either.
