Winter solstice is when...
...because of the earth's tilt, your hemisphere is leaning farthest away from the sun, and therefore:

The daylight is the shortest.

The sun has its lowest arc in the sky.

It is usually between december 21 and december 23.

The winter solstice is also when many pagan religions celebrated the re-birth of the sun, which is why the romans scheduled the official celebration of the birth of jesus around the same time. So that no one celebration would upset anyone else's celebration, quite ingenious little fellows wheren't they?
