Book Review: Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin

In my first post of 2010, resolution #2 was to get more involved in French fandom. I mentioned an online genre reading group that basically worked as a forum: Le Cercle d'Atuan. We vote and discuss one book per month (with multiple online meetings as close as every two days) and also chit chat about loads of other genre or non-genre related stuff.  ( Read more... )

Looks interesting especially in the wake of Ship Breaker!

I really didn't like A Game of Thrones, but I've still been thinking about reading something else he's written - especially because it's mostly the world of that Fantasy series that I didn't like. You write such lovely reviews, and this story sound captivating. It almost sounds like something China Mieville would write - I'm very interested in reading this. Thanks Roxane!

Thanks! This means a lot, especially considering the fact that I always feel my reviews are somewhat a bit "light" and never seem to go as in depth as your own.

I'm not much of a fan of Miéville, but it's mostly because I've had one bad experience with Iron Council and have never tried again. I think that next time I do, it'll be some of his YA works... seems safest...

So yeah, dunno just how much the comparison with Miéville actually holds up, guess you'll have to tell me that for yourself ;-). However, I need to stress (because I didn't in the review and I know this counts for you... and really for me too ;-)), there are no strong female characters in Fevre Dream. It's really all about Marsh and York, but it's really worth it nevertheless.

I'm sure Martin and Mieville don't write anything alike; it was just the atmosphere you conjured up here that brought him to mind :) I really liked Iron Council, but I'd already read Perdido Street Station and The Scar (my favourite of his) so I was used to his style and the world. I did like Iron Council a lot though.

Thanks, I won't expect many female characters! That's better than putting the female characters in and letting them fizzle, which I felt he did with A Game of Thrones.

Ah ça y est, tu as rattrapé ton retard! Eh bien, c'était rapide! Moi je suis bien à la bourre sur Sans Parler du Chien, mais j'espère pouvoir donner un bon coup de pouce demain!

Hâte de lire ta chronique de Riverdream!
