Anyway, I may have to resolve my issues with romance at some point, because the fact that my dislike of the genre has to do with an extreme reaction to a pressure imposed by society is also something that disturbs me. I don't want to be defined by what others think I should like, but I also do not want to be defined by a reaction to what others think I should like. Is this making any sense? Nevermind, anyway, it's not the purpose of this entry though it's related.
Wow, it's like you're in my head. I completely understand what you're saying.
And finally someone who agrees with me about Edward! He's so controlling. Whether it's because Bella's human or female makes no difference. If this was a real life scenario, I'd be taking Bella aside and having a serious chat with her about how abusive relationships get started.
And the secondary characters irritated me too! How it's implied that all the rest of humanity, with the sole exception of Bella, are a bunch of boring shallow idiots is just plain annoying.
I'm glad at least someone can relate to what I'm saying! I have this very strong intrinsic reject of anything that has to do with romance (except when it's in an Octavia E. Butler book, but really she can't be compared to most writers... she's something else altogether). I know it's silly but I mentally cringe each time I hear that word being applied to a book or a movie and it's the best way to make sure I'll never go close to that book or movie. It's silly because, like for any other genre, romance must have its awesome elements and I'm probably missing out on a lot of things

Oh I truly understand. I can take romantic elements in a story, after all most fantasy has some kind of romantic storyline, but just plain romance novels/movies? I just don't believe in romance, much. Certainly not love at first sight. I don't want what I'm supposed to want because I'm a woman--a husband and children--and most of the time people either think I'm weird, or that I'll change my mind when I get older. How old is older? I started telling people that when I was ten or eleven, only then it was "wait until you get to high school, you'll start liking boys then" (it's not that I don't like boys, just not on a permanent basis).
So I guess a lot of me not liking the romance genre is that I just do not relate to it, and like you I don't like anyone to make assumptions about what I'm supposed to like based on my gender.
But I reread Twilight just a few weeks ago, and while I still think it's terrible, I remember now the first time I read it that I did like Bella, up until she started swooning over Edward. I was like that

I've read the books too and don't understand all the hype over them. I liked them well enough but they weren't of the "Oh, this is so fantastic, you gotta read it" veriety. The only female vampire main character I can think of right off the top of my head was the Anna Strong series by Jeanne Stein.
I take it with that fast reading superpower of yours, you've read the entire series. Did you enjoy it all the way through? Have you also read the draft of the fifth volume which leaked a few months ago?
Is that Anna Strong character involved in a romantic relationship with a human? I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks!
The last book rather annoyed me. I felt the author took the easy way out of some situations but yes, I did enjoy them. I also liked The Host more than I thought I would though it definitely reads as a romantic sci-fi.
Not a romantic relationship but familial and business ones.
