One thing that strikes me, re-reading this, is how comforting it must have been for Edmund to have Eustace. Not just to have someone to love, but to talk to, who'd understand *all* the aspects of his life, you know? Not just about Narnia, but about Caspian and being in love with another man. Lucy, though highly sympathetic, can only go so far in.

And I love Jill's sensible friendliness. I can see them being good friends for life, like Digory and Polly-and Eustace is lucky to have her. She's not the kind to be spiteful, if she got more attached than she meant to, or anything.

{{hugs back}} You're right, in a way Edmund and Eustace can understand each other more than anyone else can; they both have the experience of Narnia and England and being attracted to men in both... and Eustace is a little attracted to Caspian, too, after all. Lucy's just not sexually oriented at all, IMO, so her understanding is only really intellectual.

Jill might eventually end up with Rilian or another Narnian, but she will still always love Eustace as a friend at the very least. She understands what's going on with him better than Lucy does, even.
