Late, but a couple of thoughts on Victory of the Daleks

It's late, I know, and most everyone's posted their reactions or thoughts on Doctor Who s05e03 ("Victory of the Daleks") by now, but if you've been following my Twitter, you may know I'm under the weather, to put it mildly. (We think a bad reaction to the new migraine meds, but I'm going to try to stick it out till Monday unless my BP rises even ( Read more... )

It pains me that I don't like it more than I do. Episode one was flawed, but I was all "okay, let's see if Moffat can get the writing bugs out of his system and then things'll be okay" because the actual acting wasn't as erratic as the later episodes.

But episodes 2 & 3? Oh, so very very fail. In so many many ways. I do NOT want to see the series die again -- I waited most of my adult life for Doctor Who to resurface in anything other than old VHS tapes I had of the originals. And RTD and company turned it over in "very rude health" (as they all put it, when speaking in public) indeed. To kill it now, after being handed such a gem? Not just wasteful and horrible but downright criminal.

Sigh. I just hope, hope, hope it will stick around. And improve.

Yeah, I'm more afraid it will die again through lack of nourishment. It's like they're feeding it on a diet of chips and white rice and soda pop, but nothing substantial to fill you up. I think it was in my late teens or early twenties when it went off the air and I was devastated. I was so thrilled when it came back. And it was so good when it came back. And now it's...well it had potential the first episode and I liked a lot of the second one, but this one was just...awful. I can just see the color crayon companies making NEW! Improved! Day-glo Dalek color crayons! What was that hideousness? Who thought that was a good idea? Amy is the only bright spot, but already she's becoming the one who always saves the day. Do Not Want.

In the meantime, I'm rapidly becoming one of "those fans" who cling to the "old Who" (which is funny, because it's actually the "old New Who") and whinge about how the new Doctor is just plain Wrong.

I actually took my Ten doll out from where he'd fallen underneath the screen-chassis of my iMac and stood him up, so he'd be there to remind me that all is not lost. I keep looking at him and feeling so very sad.

And nightly I cling to the fic of Ten and Nine like a clinging clingy thing. Lord, I'm one of Those Women, aren't I?

We're clearly not going to agree on this episode (I think it's weak, but certainly didn't hate it), but I did want to point out that Karen Gillan is the one who picked miniskirts for her character - this wasn't a decision the production team forced on her. She thought they looked good on her and that they'd be comfortable.

Yes, I've read that now (I am very behind on interviews and Confidentials) and while it boggles me personally (I hated miniskirts in the 60s and 70s, as I found them uncomfortable, even when I was young and skinny and a ballet dancer), I'm seeing a trend among women her age to really like them, find them comfortable, and wear them quite a lot.

Granted, with her legs, I'd wear them too. Hell, with her body. She's a gorgeous woman, she is. And talented. And smart. And funny. I think she's got a great career ahead of her, period.

Yeah, the previews looked like River Song looking like she could be his mother. AMG. ::giggles:: (Granted, I adore the actress, and happy to see her getting work in something that's so prominent on TV again.)

But yeah, I sorta didn't watch the Confidential. Cause I thought I'd have my head explode.

I was so disappointed because I adore Mark Gatiss. I gotta wonder what happened with this script.
