"When God saw that the world was so over proud, He sent a dearth on earth, and made it full hard. A bushel of wheat was at four shillings or more, Of which men might have had a quarter before.... And then they turned pale who had laughed so loud, And they became all docile who before were so proud. A man's heart might bleed for to hear the cry Of ( Read more... )

I did have some ideas for a cause involving the abandonment of the CAP and American equivenlants meaning the West was completely reliant on imports and then WW3 breaks out disrupting supplies and causing the collapse of western civilization.

Unless WW3 was also hideously destructive this would leave China followed by India as world superpowers.

I think technology wouldn't really be lost but research science would take a hit so the principles would be not properly understood on the more advanced stuff. Far from a return to the stone age though.

Interesting.

When I said reduced quality of theology I was refering to the decimation of the monastic communities of the 13th century, which is perhaps a reduction of the quantity. I bow to your superior knowledge of such matters.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the government takeover idea, I would expect people and communities to become more independent and less reliant on a large scale infrastructure which is prone to failure from famine or plague.

I do agree with the need for practical training and skills over research. I wonder what sort of effect it would have on academic communities, colleges and apprenticeships would be a much sounder and higher priority investment than traditional universities.

It bugs me that while I've seen pleanty of post-apocalyptic sci-fi I've yet to see one which gives a decent portrayal of a post-really shitty century sci-fi rather than a post-uberdisaster one.

For starters, there would probably have been collapse in the financial markets as the economy cooled (lots of people dying would almost certainly cool the economy considerably, what with the labour costs of manufactured goods and services rising and the number of customers falling). This would be the end of London, whose wealth is driven by the City, as any kind of power in the world ( ... )
