I thought the same thing: When I read this yesterday I had just said thank you to the girl who gave me my food over the counter and at least to half a dozen colleagues who wished me a happy new year. Today I said thank you to J for making me coffee. We still thank each other a lot for the everyday chores the other does. Like making food, or shopping, or driving home...
I agree, a funny question. But, I think there might be a difference of just saying thank you for favors or something like that which you say all the time, because all the time people do something for you you are grateful about. Maybe what they mean is being really, really grateful, from the bottom of your heart. As in: being a good friend in dire straits or whatever.
