Pfft, yes. I occasionally also post news stories. ;)

Seriously - yes. It's just that a lot of what's been on my mind recently has been depressive topics; I'm in an area where I barely know anybody, and I seem to keep alienating the people I want most to be around, so I'm more inclined to be dysthymic than I mighgt otherwise. Besides, with a dedicated, limited outlet for my worst thoughts, I'll be more inclined to post by best thoughts as well.

My one suggestion would be tips on whether it's venting, in which case sympathy is appropriate, or asking for solutions, in which case sympathy alone would be inadequate.

Incidentally, am I assuming properly that this is not a "please add me"?

Not a not. O:> I wouldn't worry about the distinction if I were going to say "don't add me.

You're right though, it's hard to know what to say when someone is really upset and depressed, even if you have been in that position many a time.

But, it's something one always wishes one knew what to say.

What do you suggest? What works for you?

I don't know what works from me. The reason I'm screening posts on the filter (and by the way, is this an "opt me in"?) is so that I get honest answers to what I post, which will hopefully help me find a happy medium on responses.
