She was warm, drowsy and held close to a great, soothing presence. The dream faded to dregs of darkness. She breathed calmly again, turned in her sleep...

And cold air and wetness broke into the warmth surrounding her. Her hand met a barrier and she pushed at it, her fingers flexing to gather her will and direct it at the obstacle--but nothing came, merely a soft crunch as her hand went through the shell even without whatever she had tried to do.

She brought the hand to her eyes and wiped away the damp, clinging substance. There was light from above. The lower half of a shell, big enough to clasp her within, still surrounded her. She looked at her hands: well-kept nails, faint calluses, the fine webbing of age across the skin.

"Well, that is certainly curious," she said, half to herself, quite calmly. "What's happened? Where am I?"

The calmness that had enveloped the second girl moments before was pushed away as she became aware of consciousness and began to stir. She took a breath, and was surprised to find that it wasn't air that she was breathing in despite the fact that the oxygen in her lungs had been replenished none the less. That was startling ( ... )

Orca's rather bushy brows rose towards the brim of his hat as his very first newborn slid onto the floor. It was an attractive, well-shaped lady of his own age. He was sure most greeters weren't nearly so lucky on their first goes, but all the same, this was business and no time to be mixing it with pleasure. He grabbed a towel from the table and handed it to her.

"What you've landed in is--" and here he was interrupted by the second cocoon giving way. "When it rains it pours. 'Scuse me." Orca strode back to the table and collected two newborn packs and another towel, the latter of which was promptly dropped on the head of the gangly young thing that had just hatched.

"What's happened is that you've just been born. Born again, and I don't mean any of that religious hoo-hah, I mean it literal-like. What you've got is a new life, though it's not one I'd wager you chose to take. Now the place you're in is called Edensphere. Giant Tree in a glass Sphere. You'll think I'm crazy but once you step out of here, you'll see ( ... )

Well, that was--something. She took in the rows of identical cocoons and the high room they were in, unlike anything her mind could supply that she had seen before. Such places existed beyond the world, her mind said, and they were full of deceit and temptation. One should never trust a denizen of those realms, even if the reasons for that didn't quite come to her.

Her eyes narrowed in indignation at the man. Had he just...?

This had already crossed a threshold of ridiculous. A spirit might so strip one of basic dignity, then offer a morsel of reconciliation. She ought to take nothing that was offered. That seemed important. So was something to cover herself. With all the grace she could summon, she stepped out of the cocoon, took the towel and wrapped it securely around herself.

"That is certainly a lot of talk, good ser. What is the meaning of this, if I may ask? Whose arldom is this, or whose kingdom? And why have you held us in these shells?"

Her ears perked at the sound of someone speaking, and she was promptly distracted by something being tossed over her head. When she'd pushed it aside enough to realize it was a towel, she was quick to use it to wrap around her body. Before she could demand any answers of the figures before her though, the older man began speaking. It was only then that she noticed the other occupant, an older woman, looked to have just emerged in the same condition as she had.

That dream was all they had...? She turned her attention to the other woman's questions, waiting for the answer and adding a few herself.

"I don't understand, why would we be born again? Who decided to do that and why? Are people here just continuously re-born?" That is if what he was saying was even true. But if it wasn't, chances were they wouldn't get the truth from him.
