The Hatchery, the 28th, I guess blue_shields March 2 2011, 19:24:23 UTC
Sky was feeling fit and energetic as he arrived for his shift at the Hatchery. The last month had been chaos for everyone, but it seemed to be winding down somewhat, which was good; he felt there was enough injury and death in this place without adding a rapidly-changing Wilderness and random craziness on top of that.

He spotted Lin when he got to the entrance, nodding slightly at her and not commenting on the subtitles above her head. He'd had them before himself, after all, and so he felt he was in no position to say anything about them.

The silence was definitely appreciated. So appreciated that she had to break it. "Don't look at me. Look the other way." Maybe it would have been easier to convince her fellow guard if she hadn't used the same tone she would have used if she was talking to an annoying dog wagging its tail and barking for a cookie.

In her defense, Lin had a lot on her mind that day, and even if she had come there voluntarily it was still hard to cope with the stupid bubble.

She must hate me now. That was so stupid. All of it.

Is this the sound of steps, is someone else coming-- no, no it must have been a cat. Or a dog. Or something else. The last thing I need is to be somewhere crowded.

If only I hadn't strained my ankle. I should have let Crimson die. He's an idiot. Why is he alive?

She didn't check whether Sky was actually looking at her or not. She couldn't control her thoughts, but at least she could stare at the ground until the shift was over. And that-- would have things less awkward, wouldn't it?

Sky gave Lin a slight glare and shrugged, doing as he was told, figuring that it cost him nothing to try and give her a little privacy.

"I've had that happen to me before, too. In fact, it was happening to my Guide on the day that I was born."

He knew she wasn't much of a conversationalist; however, this was going to be a very unpleasant shift if he kept having to look away from her, especially if nothing else happened.

"They're going too fast for me to keep up with, but I won't look if you don't want me to."

"Yes, I don't want you to." She replied immediately, barely giving him time to finish speaking.

Thinking too fast-- she'd never considered that a good thing, especially when lying in bed thinking about all the ways she hadn't been strong enough, stubborn enough, mature enough, enough for Bastet to like her. But if he couldn't keep up, and therefore couldn't read-- then it was a good thing, without a doubt.

"It's different when it happens to everyone. It's happening only to me." Just to let him know his words weren't comforting her one bit. As if she hadn't made this hard enough for him already.

Hatchery, 28th, between shifts? unevoked March 3 2011, 00:40:08 UTC
Really, Castor was glad to get to the hatchery. There were far fewer people, usually just the guards, greeters, anyone watching cocoons or any newborns, and it made having a giant bubble full of bullshit over him more tolerable. At least, when compared to the bazaar-- Here, he could just mention that he had no idea why there was a little speech bubble filling with everything from little cartoon kittens playing to what looked like the fine print of some kind of contract.

At least, he was glad to get out of the bustle of the bazaar and all the people craning to look or read whatever was appearing now, until he saw Lin-- with the same kind of stupid bubble of words over her as he had.

He hadn't been expecting to see her much while she had been upset with him-- she made the schedule after all, didn't she? But that didn't mean they'd never cross paths, especially working in the same place. Annoyed, he glanced down, simply lifting a hand to acknowledge her as the bubble continued its tangent:

...for he is truly his brother's keeper and ( ... )

Even knowing this was going to happen, Lin was anything but happy to see him. She took her duty seriously, and had no chance, with all the people asking to stay home, with all the people turned into children. She couldn't even tell them to come to work anyway, because she had stayed home too, whenever a curse involving virginity struck-- and besides, a bunch of children running around would have been a problem rather than a solution.

Lin frowned and looked away as Castor came closer. What was there to say? She was still angry. He was still angry, too, probably. But they had to get over it enough to work together.

Which basically meant stand there in silence and not look at each other the whole time. But Lin had to-- just a peek at his cloud... But, it makes absolutely no sense was what appeared in hers when she did.

I should have expected someone like him to have crazy thoughts. Or has he found out how to hide his real thoughts? Maybe if I were constantly reciting poems in mind--?Was that even a poem? Lin looked away again, quickly ( ... )

He caught her glance over-- and up at the cloud above his head, lips curving down in an annoyed frown. So she had the same garbled mess as him. He glanced up to hers out of curiosity, pausing for a moment.

While yeah, his made absolutely no sense, hers almost seemed to fit.

You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

--Whereas his own was still contextless trash.

"You need something?" He asked, his glance sharpening a bit. If they could get through a brief exchange without commenting on one another's stupid little speech bubbles, it would be a miracle-- especially as much as hers fit-- Hiding real thoughts? Reciting poetry?

They got the metric system there, they wouldn't know what the fuck a quarter pounder was.

It was different, at least. Why would his be completely incoherent, but hers almost seem to fit the situation at hand? It was just enough to spurn his curiosity, though.

Now Lin took a step back, if Castor was being tortured with her same thing, then there was really something wrong with him. Those were his thoughts? Really?

That's creepy. He's not smart enough to figure out how to hide his thoughts, if I haven't found a way it's impossible he succeeded. So he must be crazy.

She wasn't really in the mood for one of their usual 'conversations' where they'd snipe back and forth at each other, even though they hadn't for a while and she did miss them. But it seemed that whether she agreed or not, her thoughts were dead-set on starting a fight.

He's always been crazy. Now everything makes sense.

"--No." So she'd pretend she wasn't thinking anything, or that he couldn't read.

It's been a while since we last talked.

The Bazaar, the 21st, late afternoon? live_ringer March 3 2011, 05:31:42 UTC
When Lyle had joined Bastet in the bumper car earlier that day, he thought the resulting joyride might be entertaining. "Entertaining" wasn't exactly the word for it. "Harrowing" would likely be a better fit. But he had come out of the ordeal whole and not mowed down in a fit of rage, so he supposed he could not complain.

Right up until he realized he had left something in the car, that is.

Normally he would not make much fuss about a lighter, particularly since he had quit smoking, but this one had a bit of sentimental value attached to it. He would just have to track Bastet down to ask for it back. He did not know her schedule, but the clothing store seemed as good a place as any to start looking.

She had to go, the more time she spent outside the more likely it was she'd run into someone she knew, and they'd read her thoughts and it'd be annoying, and awkward, and embarrassing. But... Lin was already at the bazaar, so it couldn't hurt to walk by Bastet's shop and maybe peek in. Maybe even say hi!

No, who was she kidding? She'd never actually go in on her own without being invited or at least letting Bastet know first. And the woman was surely working, she couldn't disturb her.

Furthermore, we've been almost always together for so many days, she must be sick of seeing my face by now. And who could blame her?

She almost bumped into him as she hurriedly walked around the shop for the fourth or fifth time, trying to find the courage to knock.

"What are you doing here?"

Are you here to see her?

"Whoa!" Lyle took a step back, recoiling as they nearly collided. Lin's brusque statement got a sardonic brow raise.

"Hi to you, too."

The bubble over her head was new. He'd seen a few people walking around with similar things, but he hadn't really bothered to read them. It seemed to be a natural extension of what she had already said, though.

"If by 'her' you mean Bastet, yeah. I came by to see if I left something in her little auto."

"Wh--" right. For a moment Lin had almost forgotten he could read her mind like he would have read any street sign. She was even at the perfectly right height to have the bubble exactly in front of his eyes, how convenient!

What little auto? When have you been there? Why? appeared over her head before she could open her mouth.

Lin raised an eyebrow but didn't really think she needed to add anything. And telling him to ignore it would have been completely useless. She pointed at the bubble.

"What it says."

Outside of The Hatchery, morning of the 21st inthecenterfold March 4 2011, 10:44:23 UTC
Smoke was mostly hoping that no one would see him as he approached work that morning. He knew the damn bubbles still appeared over his head and that he was still after all this time stuck in the body of a kid. On the other hand, he was almost hoping someone would see him - and realize that he was capable enough in that size to still work, even if it was on Bastet's orders that he wasn't. He got it that people stuck as babies shouldn't work - but he was just a bit older than that.

He didn't actually go inside The Hatchery - he lurked just outside of the entryway, wondering who all was actually still working with all the craziness of late.

["Damn I wish I could actually be working... All this free time and not in the right body to enjoy it."]

Lin was preparing for what was going to be a painful few hours, waiting for the other Guard to show up. Assuming they would show up. So many people had been turned into children or had other things to deal with that she could hold onto the tiny thread of hope that nobody was going to come. She could have just sat there alone with her thoughts (literally, since they were right over her head) and nobody would have bother her for the whole shift.

Now and then, she closed her eyes and focused to feel everyone's reiatsu, figure out where the others were, what they were doing-- and it was during one of those moments that she thought she heard the faint sound of steps.

"Who's there?"

Please let it not be a Guard. Let it be a cat.

Lin glared up at the bubble of her head, that thing needed to stop embarrassing her like that. Besides, that kind of wishful thinking was out of place, she knew very well what cat steps sounded like, and those, she was sure, were human.

[[OOC: Switching to your thought-style for consistency XD I wasn't sure where Lin was in proximity to Smoke so I'm assuming not in his line of sight...]]

Of course it would be Lin- Smoke groaned. Go figure. "Just checking in..." He pursed his lips. "To make sure the place hasn't burned to the ground or anything." To see how understaffed the place is.

He took a few steps closer, on the look-out for who else was on duty with her. Did Bastet tell her... "Looks like you guys could use a hand, though."

'Did Bastet tell her' what?

It appeared over her head before she could stop it. While it was somewhat of a relief that Smoke had a bubble too, it didn't really make her situation easier. Neither did the fact that he looked much, much younger-- she couldn't tell how much, all children looked the same to her until they could be considered adults.

"You can stay, but you will not look at me. And I will not look at you in return."

It's convenient for the both of us, and especially for me.
