------
Smoke had barely managed to remember to tell Aniki where he was going before taking off for the park. It had taken him more than a few minutes to watch replies appear under Lotus' words, and then to think about 'sand' and 'taking someone' before he remembered the hourglasses. He'd seen Youth and Bell asking around about it, and Smoke had no idea which if either of them Lotus was talking about, but by that point it didn't matter.
He hadn't thought it would be this soon. Unlike those who lived with Hourglass-bound people, Smoke had no idea when the sand would run out, no appreciation for the impending cut-off time. He'd been focusing on going over his notes and cursing the fact that he couldn't put it together, rather than accepting the fact that there was likely nothing he could do.
So he'd come upon Amurui's campsite fully expecting no one to be there. It wasn't what he'd been hoping for, but this whole thing had him being a complete pessimist. Instead, he found Amurui trapped inside of a cocoon-like thing that was clear and no trace of the hourglass collar anywhere. The campsite looked a little disturbed, but not really much else.
It was as Smoke was staring at the sleeping-or-dead form of his brother that realization had dawned on him.
He's not gone - not really, but- dead? Fuck I hope not. Getting reborn? Here, not in the Hatchery? Shit, shit, shit. Smoke had thought as he'd clenched his fists. Shit I hope he remembers everything-
Smoke had then fallen on top of the cocoon to get a good look at Amurui's face, specifically his eyepatch. Still there. Not frayed or broken or anything. Oh god, if he wakes up same as last time - he's got to wake up, right? Damnit how long will this last? As long as the collars? It was as he worried over the thought of Amurui re-hatching and going straight into a raging frenzy that Smoke had written in his journal.
Aniki and the others kept him company through the night, some coming and going while others stayed. Only once did Smoke get up to walk around, to have a smoke and stop by Cloud's campsite to do so in peace, then return to his vigil by Amurui.
Smoke was getting the distinct impression that waiting for news of a dear friend's life or death, out in the cold with nothing to do but sit and stare and smoke, this was all somehow all too familiar. He didn't want to believe it, that such a thing had happened to him - to Gojyo - in the past, because it felt like one of the utterly worst possible things ever.
He wasn't prepared at all when noon rolled around that day. Smoke was sitting on the ground, leaning against Amurui's cocoon-thing with his head was down in his knees and trying desperately not to fall asleep. The blanket wrapped around his shoulders wasn't helping. Five cigarette butts lay in front of his feet and his lighter had fallen from his pocket. He was completely zoned out...
