It was early morning, with dawn colors still streaking the sky and that cool, fresh feeling in the air. Kurayami took a deep breath of it, enjoying the quiet of the islands at this time of day, the gentle creaking and swaying of the bridge and the soft colors in the sky. She'd decided to head down early, to make sure she got a good place in the Bazaar before the day got started in earnest.
The vaulted gateway of the Bazaar passed overhead as she stepped off the bridge. It was so quiet without the usual bustle of customers, the sleepy silence broken only by the occasional noisy rattle of a shop opening its doors for the day. Strolling down the tiled arcades, Kurayami glanced this way and that, looking for a good spot.
There. A slight niche in the wall, just off the main street. Kurayami crossed to it and stopped, setting down the cheap folding chairs she'd been carrying under one arm with a sigh of relief. Unfolding them, she set her writing desk on one and opened it.
Everything seemed to be in order. Paints, pencils, pastels, brushes, and plenty of paper; the precious fruit of any number of small purchases and barters. Taking the top sheet and a bit of red pastel crayon, she wrote with careful, simple style:
PAINTINGS
PORTRAITS
prices negotiable
Looking the results over critically, she nodded, satisfied, and propped the sign on one folding chair, facing it out, then sat down on the other one and settled her desk in her lap. Taking a deep breath, she sighed. This was it. Time to see if this would fly or fall.
...in the meantime, she might as well sketch a little to pass the time, though. How often did you get to draw the Bazaar architecture without a hundred people in it?
