Stoneface was aware that being a trifle late for the person he was supposed to employ didn't exactly set up the greatest of images. Despite this, he couldn't possibly resist when a woman's voice rang out, "Stop! Thief!"

He was a thief-taker when it came down to it, had never been anything more than a thief taker, no matter how comfortable his boots were or how many people looked up to him, so off he went. He'd caught the thief after a satisfying chase, and lugged him off on one of his brawnier watchmen before going to meet up with Nikki. This explained the mildly pleased expression on his face which was, as his name would suggest, carved as if in stone and the thin layer of dust that covered him from the knees down. When he walked in and saw a young woman already sitting there, he held one hand up in greeting.

"Sorry I'm late," he said. "Something came up. You're Nikki, then?"

She lifted her head when a voice pulled her from her somewhat anxious contemplation, and she quickly snapped to her feet when she saw Stoneface approach, his hand lifted casually and a strangely pleased look on his stern, squared face. Straightening her back, she regarded him a moment, then ventured a thin smile herself.

"Don't worry about it," she assured him; "I know you're a busy man." She nodded and extended a hand to offer to shake his. "And yes, I'm Nikki. Thank you for coming to meet with me." She tilted her head curiously. "You look happy, though--did something good happen?"

Nikki wasn't particularly prone to smalltalk, especially on a business outing, but she had to admit she was quite curious. She'd only ever seen Stoneface a few times since her arrival in the Sphere, and he usually looked quite stoic. Unless he was taking people down with a crossbow, which she had found quite dashing and impressive, in an old-fashioned and rather midieval way.

Stoneface wiped his hands off on his trousers before taking Nikki's hand into his own, and though he didn't actually smile, he certainly looked a trifle more satisfied than before. "Straight to the punch, eh?" He said, then happily patted the pocket holding one of his many small blunt objects that dealt the final blow to the back of the thief's knee.

"But yes, you'd be right in that, to a point. Thieves are no good, but I don't mind catching them."

He gestured towards the bleachers. "Sit down. We'll talk first."

Nikki chuckled. "No rest for those who fight the good fight, huh?" she said. She could relate--even if Guard duty had been quiet, she was never fully off-duty, even on her days off. She never left home unarmed, and never walked down the street without her eyes and ears open. Law enforcement wasn't just a job, it was a way of life.

She moved toward the bleachers at Stoneface's gesture, and took a seat on the second row up, waiting for him to join her. She cast her eyes out over the unusual architecture, smiling a bit. Despite the unusual surroundings, it felt like an appropriate place to have this meeting.

Stoneface sat down on the third row up and settled his hands on his knees as he curiously regarded the woman in front of him. Unlike the other women on the team, Nikki did not look particularly suited for battle, but then again, neither did he.

"All right, Nikki, I can guess why you want to be a watchman. You were a copper in the past, right? And once you're a copper, you're never quite off-duty, and besides, you want to learn more about yourself."

He looked her square in the eye. "Not a bad reason, and certainly not an uncommon one. But can you tell me why else? This is a dangerous job."
