Handmaiden had wondered how long it would take Zombie to return, if he did return--the manner of his death had led her to believe that the Tree had been responsible, but that didn't give any sign one way or the other as to whether he would be reborn. Simon and other victims of its "judgment" had returned, after all. As for her own sense of judgment... she wasn't sure about that yet. There was a part of her that said in no uncertain terms that he deserved death for what he did, to be killed until it was permanent. But the greater part of her thinking rebelled at such a notion ( ... )

When Handmaiden made her presence more well known, he made brief eye contact with her. It didn't last long, his body tensing. He felt even more uncomfortable, being antsy in the seat he was in. His thoughts shifted to less than sane thoughts accordingly, most dealing with why Handmaiden, "the woman", was looking at him in such a manner ( ... )

Suddenly, a memory sprang to mind--the immature conversation that they had had over the journals when he was stuck writing in that wretched archaic fashion and Zombie had a plague of spelling errors ( ... )

Handmaiden raised an eyebrow at Zombie's sudden reaction to her, manner and tone changing entirely. She did not say anything to his warning, not moving closer but not backing away either. He seemed to calm soon enough... the answers he gave were what Handmaiden been expecting, to her disappointment. He remembered his life in Edensphere, but not the assault on the Bazaar that had lead to his death. Her frown deepened very slightly ( ... )
