As Gene spoke, Grift's mind drifted. He knew the protocol for handling a gun already, and it simply seemed redundant to even bother listening, so instead he eyed the table of guns. A Glock, a Sig Sauer, a rifle... all good guns. He was beginning to lean towards the rifle when the AK-47 caught his eye.

"Hel-lo there," he said to himself, eyes bright as he strode over there and picked the gun up, sliding one hand across it and inspecting its make with great interest. A smile crawled its way across his face as he held it loosely in his hands, a comfortable feeling of familiarity rushing over him. Sure, it was of a Russian make - a fact that Grift disliked - but a good gun was a good gun ( ... )

Gene raised a brow at Grift's enthusiastic inspection of the AK-47. It looked like he had a live one ( ... )

"Then I'd be worrying about whoever feels the need for an AK-47," Grift said, then laughed. "Although I must say, I may have to look into getting one for myself at some point. They're not my weapon of choice for defense, but it's a treat to take out to the range."

Grift followed Gene over to the target dummies, taking one of the earmuffs while he was at it and letting them hang around his neck. "Semi-auto," he said, looking pleased as he inspected the dummies. "Nice touch there. All I've been practicing on are blocks of wood."

He settled his earmuffs on his head and got the gun ready. "Just tell me when, sir Teacher."

"Hah, probably wise," Gene said mostly under his breath. Truth be told, he probably should have been more worried before taking the commission, but it was a lucky thing common sense kicked in. "You may want to take to renting from the stall if all you want is a romp on the range. If you aren't doing it constantly, it'd be a lot cheaper. ...Then again, you're a Greeter, right? You probably could afford to get one just for fun." Lucky bastard.

Gene laughed when Grift commented on the dummies being a nice touch. "Thanks. They're mostly junkie things we found in the Scrapyard that no one knew what to do with, so I figured no one would miss them if I found a creative use for them."

He didn't even bother hiding a smirk at the playful title. "Is your selector lever at the lowest level? If so, I'd say you're ready to go," he said as he situated his own earmuffs.

Broom didn't really want to do this. He knew this was just because the Tree had thrown them together, but he just didn't like the idea of shooting something. Even a mannequin. Guns were dangerous, and there was a big part of him balking at the idea of even handling one. Why would he want to learn how to use something that could hurt people?

That was why he was slow stepping up to the table, and he stared down at the guns for a long moment before finally picking up the Sig Sauer. Sticking to the handguns seemed like a better idea than trying any of the others. Even through his reluctance, Broom already knew how to hold it, and it only took him a moment to find the right magazine and slide it into the gun.

"... I don't think I'm ready." He sure didn't feel ready. All he really felt right now was how his stomach was trying to knot up.

last edit, I swear, and this one will make sense! live_ringer June 29 2010, 00:47:52 UTC
It looked like Gene had a reluctant case on his hands. He didn't really want to force something like this on someone--using a gun was something that should be done with a wary sort of confidence. Too much cockiness edged into dangerous territory, but too much hesitation could be bad as well. Still, the Sphere had tossed them into this situation. About the most he could do was make an effort and let Broom go as far as he felt comfortable.

...And seeing Broom load the Sig Sauer as smoothly as he did spoke of a certain amount of familiarity, if not comfort. Huh.

When Broom said he might not be ready, Gene shrugged. "No need to force it. I can understand the nervousness. But as long as you follow the rules, there's no reason anything should go wrong."

"Won't go wrong? These things are made to hurt people." Though he was holding the gun gingerly, he was keeping it pointed down and away from the others, though Broom wasn't even thinking much about what he was doing. It was almost instinctive, he just knew, and didn't quite realize that the knowledge was starting to edge past what would be common sense.

Broom looked at the mannequins that had been set up, and winced a little. They just seemed creepy... ... which did make him less reluctant to see them destroyed, vaguely human-shaped or not.

"I guess I could try it..." All he had to do was fire once or twice, and then he could at least say he didn't like it because he had done it before. And it wouldn't feel like he had wasted anyone's time, either.

"Hurt people or protect them. Depends on who's using it and their intent." Gene knew that was probably coming off as the usual "guns don't kill people, people kill people" gun nut rhetoric, but... he did believe it. Triggers didn't pull themselves, after all.

Gene nodded when Broom acquiesced to trying the gun out. "Alright, then. Mind if I see how you hold it before you fire a few off?" Just as a bit of a precaution. Some people had strange posture when they first tried firing a gun, and it could really through off a person's aim without their realizing it.
