Elsa trotted through the residential area on a sort of patrol. She was no Watchman here, but the assassins in the black pajamas last night had set her on edge, and she could handle things better in this form. It made opening doors harder, but it gave her an edge in the form of lots of sharp teeth and claws.

A howl caught her off guard, and she followed her ears and nose to a little dog who looked like he felt very sorry for himself. "Something bothering you?"

Black Hayate's hackles rose immediately as he smelt something that wasn't entirely dog... it... was that human scent under there?

Oh how embarrassing to have been caught behaving like a puppy.

"Yes." His ears drooped miserably. "Something is wrong with me, I don't know where I am and my Person doesn't want me."

This was even worse, he was whimpering like some spoilt lapdog, but he so unhappy and he couldn't stop himself. He was still a baby in so many respects. He lay down, resting his head on his front paws with a whine.

"I want to go home."

Elsa sat on her haunches beside the little fellow and looked down at him. Gods, when had she become a counselor for the small and furry? But though her heart wasn't made of marshmallow and fluffy things, in fact it was muscle and blood, she couldn't bring herself to just leave him to his self-pity.

"You look fine to me," she growled at him. "But they can't be taking too poor care of you if you're wearing a collar. Have you got enough to eat?"

Black Hayate was too forlorn to even raise his head, he just glanced up at her pathetically with baleful brown eyes.

"Those people aren't my Person," he whined. "I'm sure they're very nice, but they're not my Person, and I don't know why she keeps sending me back to them. She's my Person! Who's going to look after her if I don't?"

He couldn't bear the thought of something happening to his Person. Wasn't she as lonely without him as he was without her?

"Did I do something wrong?"

"She gives you away?" Elsa's eyes narrowed, and she felt the tickle of a growl in the back of her throat. Street dogs were one thing, they knew how to take care of themselves.

But a helpless sad sack of fur like this was in no shape to be on its own, and any half-decent owner should know that. She could probably preach to him about independence, show him the good places in the Bazaar to beg a bone or some scraps, but even though all dogs had a bit of wolf and all wolves had a bit of dog, dogs and wolves weren't the same. And this dog needed a Master.

"Why don't you tell me the story from the beginning?" she suggested.
