A howl caught her off guard, and she followed her ears and nose to a little dog who looked like he felt very sorry for himself. "Something bothering you?"

Oh how embarrassing to have been caught behaving like a puppy.
"Yes." His ears drooped miserably. "Something is wrong with me, I don't know where I am and my Person doesn't want me."
This was even worse, he was whimpering like some spoilt lapdog, but he so unhappy and he couldn't stop himself. He was still a baby in so many respects. He lay down, resting his head on his front paws with a whine.
"I want to go home."

"You look fine to me," she growled at him. "But they can't be taking too poor care of you if you're wearing a collar. Have you got enough to eat?"

"Those people aren't my Person," he whined. "I'm sure they're very nice, but they're not my Person, and I don't know why she keeps sending me back to them. She's my Person! Who's going to look after her if I don't?"
He couldn't bear the thought of something happening to his Person. Wasn't she as lonely without him as he was without her?
"Did I do something wrong?"

But a helpless sad sack of fur like this was in no shape to be on its own, and any half-decent owner should know that. She could probably preach to him about independence, show him the good places in the Bazaar to beg a bone or some scraps, but even though all dogs had a bit of wolf and all wolves had a bit of dog, dogs and wolves weren't the same. And this dog needed a Master.
"Why don't you tell me the story from the beginning?" she suggested.
