For her part, Kazahana had been waiting for such a discussion for weeks now. Unaware that Hakuteiken had found himself so well and thoroughly stuck, and hearing nothing else about or from him, she'd assumed that he was either taking his own time to think about things or being especially conscientious in allowing her time. Either way, she was finally certain about what she needed to do next.

It was entirely possible, even probably, that Hakuteiken's memory was correct and they'd been married. However, Kazahana was equally certain that she could not just jump into the role of wife to someone who, in this world at least, she had not yet had a chance to love.

But she wasn't thinking about any of this today; she was actually thinking about re-organizing one of the storage rooms when she strode through the waiting area and spotted her erstwhile husband. He didn't look injured; clearly, he was there to see her.

"Hello," she said, not overjoyed but not unpleasantly. "It's been a while."

Kazahana paused for the briefest of moments. Was it a good time? For all she'd steeled herself and been sure of what was her best course of action, it was a little different now that Hakuteiken was actually here. Butterflies seemed to have taken flight in her stomach.

No. She wouldn't run from this. She would be strong.

"It's not inopportune," she said. "Come with me." She gestured for him to follow her into one of the examination rooms-one of the two without a door, unfortunately, as the others were in use. They wouldn't have true privacy, but it was better than talking in the middle of the waiting room.

She didn't bother sitting down inside, opting to lean against the cabinet. "I was wondering where you'd been," she remarked. Myriad of miniature events. It sounded complicated. (And alliterative.)

Hakuteiken felt both thankful and relieved that he was not interfering with her work; after all, he didn't know when they would meet again if she turned him away now.

He followed, entering the room she had directed him into. It was the first time that Hakuteiken had ever been to medic island, and he was carefully scrutinizing every minute detail of his wife's workplace. Although it was well enough for all functional purposes, there was definitely room for improvement.

Not that it was the purpose of his visit, but other than the memory of their marriage he hardly knew anything at all about his wife. Thinking back to that time he'd delivered the good news, he could see why she was so upset about it. I was wondering where you'd been. Her concern--touching. Silently he vowed not to cause her anymore grief; he would do as much as he could to make her happy. In return, perhaps she would also willingly fulfill her obligation ( ... )
