While I may be wrong, most of the information I've found indicates it doesn't actually mean anything. It's kind of a default name for ninja in Japan, based on the traditional character Sarutobi Sasuke. If you look at the original Japanese spelling in the manga, Sasuke's name is always spelled in katakana, rather than kanji, which would tend to bear this out - katakana is sound-based, rather than meaning-based.
Yeah, I knew he was named after Sarutobi Sasuke -- I just wondered if the name itself had any original meaning before it became a traditional ninja appelation. Basically I just need to know so I can figure out how the translation spell deals with his name. :-)
Everything that I'm seeing is that the meaning of the name was either lost in time or it was just a name that someone came up with back in the day that sounded cool and ninja-ish.
wow. That is mindblowing to realize that you have been working on this for 8 years. I went back and read the entire offering, and while your writing has improved, more smooth and polished as well as getting across the mood and continuing to drive the story forward, it is still recognizably an Elizabeth Culmer story. Did you read any of Mal's work with Gundam Wing? Thank you for continuing this. I enjoy seeing the three disparate characters work things out. C

*wince* Yeah, I am not what anyone would call a fast writer. Or perhaps more accurately, I am not a focused writer, particularly for serialized stories. I am glad to hear that the story still works as a unified artifact, though, despite the ridiculously start-stop way I've been writing it.
(Yes, I have read and enjoyed all of Maldoror's GW fic, and most of her Naruto fic as well! She is awesome and I am sad she stopped writing fanfic, though of course I wish her well in whatever she chooses to do with her life.)
I don't know about literal meaning, but Sasuke's name could easily be a reference to the legendary ninja Sarutobi Sasuke. (The Third Hokage's surname might well be a reference to the same guy.)
Yeah, general consensus is that Uchiha Sasuke is named for Sarutobi Sasuke. I was mostly trying to figure out if the name itself had any meaning beyond "typical ninja name." *shrug*
