Actually, my father still has a coin with a hole in it from... I don't know but not much more than a century ago. XD;; but it was a round hole, not a square hole like i seem to remember from the show.
I have to admit, your commentary is more entertaining than this episode was. not a bad ep, just didn't hold my interest much. ^^;
The Avatar world goes in for square holes in their coins. This is true for Katara's silver Water Tribe coin, for the Earth Kingdom gold coins in the chest Zuko steals, and for the symbolic giant stone coins in General Fong's fortress. I think it is also true for the bronze/copper/brass Water Tribe coins the Gaang had in The Waterbending Scroll in season one. (I cannot speak for Fire Nation coins one way or the other, though; I don't think we saw Iroh's money in The Waterbending Scroll, and this season, nobody has been using Fire Nation money.)
Yeah, this episode felt like necessary filler. It gives a lot of information that is setting up various points later on, or clarifying world-building and backstory, but the plot itself is kind of forgettable.
I recall a Sokka and Mai talking shop and her trying to get techniques for the boomerang from him. But it also involved him being captured by Azula whose taking time to break him on her ship... etc etc... and using some of his clothing/accessories as bait to lure Aang. ^_^;
Ah, yeah, not quite what I'm looking for. *sigh* I just want to see Mai and Sokka being giant dorks over sharp-edged throwing weapons, with no angst involved. (Possibly with Zuko and/or Suki in the background wondering what's so wrong with hand-held weapons like fans or swords. *grin*)
Althou, Sokka is pretty much 'the' lover-boy in Avatar (After Iroh, the legendary Cassanova)... so you could sort of guess some of the subtexts involved in the breaking. Which absolutely didn't work...
Ah yea, I remember that fic. It's a good one, and surprisingly low on angst (most angst free captured fic ever, I remember thinking at the time), at least until the last few.
