Fandom: The Dark Is Rising
Pairing: Jane/Mary
Warnings: None
Chapter: Three
Rating: G
Summary: Jane sews, Mary lazes around. For 10lilies.

"I'm glad the boys are all out today," Mary says, looking out of the window. "It's a horrible day, but it serves them right for being so noisy all the time. But I thought you'd go with them..."

Jane looks up from her sewing. "Would you rather I had? Am I bothering you?"

Mary turns to look at her. Jane's sure she must be able to see right through her, right into the part of her that even now is commenting on how pretty Mary is, but she just tosses her hair back and laughs as if she sees nothing at all out of the ordinary. "I suppose I'm not surprised you prefer my company. And it's okay... at least you're nice and quiet. Actually, I don't feel like studying today at all."

"What would you rather do?"

"Oh, I don't know... What are you making, anyway? I'm no good at sewing."

Jane carefully pushes her needle through the fabric so she doesn't lose it, and then shakes it out, so that Mary can see it properly. "It's a skirt. I've already done most of it on a machine, I'm just finishing it off."

"It's lovely," Mary says, barely looking at it. And then, after a moment, "Do you suppose you could make me one like it?"

"I could show you how I made this one..."

Mary wrinkles her nose. Jane thinks, not for the first time -- and probably not for the last time -- that she actually looks cute like that. "I'd like that, but I told you... I can't sew. Can't be bothered sewing, either."

"You should learn. It's a useful thing to know." Jane smiles, sneaking a look at Mary through her lashes as she rescues her needle, rethreading it. "More useful than algebra, at least."

Mary shrugs. "I'll get someone to sew for me."

"You won't be darning your husband's socks, then," she teases, her heart suddenly pounding for some stupid reason, half-expecting Mary to start talking about some boy or other she has her eye on, and whether sewing would impress him. Instead, Mary just shrugs.

"I don't know if I will get married," she says. And then, quickly, "Though I'll probably have a lot of boyfriends. People at school think I'm very pretty."

"You are," Jane says, without thinking. She blushes, a little, but she decides that she doesn't care that she actually came out and said that. Girls can tell their friends they're pretty, after all. Right?

Mary doesn't seem to pick up on it anyway. "Thank you."

"Maybe I'll make you a skirt when I get home," Jane says, after a moment of silence. "If you let me measure you now."

"Okay," Mary says, and she smiles her pretty smile. "Thank you, Jane."

"It's my pleasure," Jane says, and she memorises that smile.
