I think it's one of those stylised fads in the same way that the "sign of the Devil" \_ _/ \_ _/ is a cool rocker thing.

Personally, I'm a fan of squids and octopi, so I dig the artistic renditions. If you have Netflix, get "Call of Cthulhu", produced by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. It's kinda fun if you're into retro-style moovies.
