The only conventional wisdom I know about windows and thunderstorms is that you need to be close to the window so that the reflective glare of internal light apparatus doesn't interfere with the view. Is there something else that I haven't been told?

Supposedly, it's not safe to be near windows (even the NWS warnings said so). Why this is, I haven't been able to figure out. It's the roof that's in danger of getting struck, not an arbitrary section of a wall that happens to be transparent. This is partly why I chose to blatantly ignore said "wisdom".

I suppose that said wall sections are more likely to transmogrify in to shrapnel, but that's generally true regardless of the weather.

I am surprised that the forest west of Hancock does not burst into flame...

In retrospect, this was a little prophetic, although the fire started was in two adjacent houses on Houghton Avenue, just south of US-41 in Houghton.
