I don't know if this would make a difference, but I know long-distance runners have some weird shoe lacing techniques that are supposed to reduce some of the more common issues - one of which is losing toenails like this. Maybe something to Google and try out?
I hear you on the political rage - I keep reminding myself not to pick fights with my FB friends who have terribly political opinions. They're making it so hard though...

Well, despite the subject-line, I can't really argue with you.
As for solutions, i've actually taken to wearing foam protectors on the big toes. (Those injuries came about during my first game back from injury. Yes, both of them.) I think my biggest problem is that I have very wide, very flat feet, so it's hard to get shoes that really fit right. I usually end up with something so tight it hurts, or so lose my feet kind of flop around inside them. Insoles help, but - obvious - not to perfection.

Fortunately most of mine are at least in the same political ballpark. If I have any raving right-wingers they're at least wise enough to keep quiet about it in my presence. But even so, I find myself getting short-tempered.
