You're right, of course, but western imperialism is at the heart of the conflict between "us" and "them". If the West was to mind it's own business, the Muslim world (or, more properly, the accurately, much of the Middle Eastern and Western Asian parts of the Muslim world) could get on with their internal conflicts over how to deal with the facts of modern world, as the West did over the 300 or so years since the Enlightenment came along to kick break the shackles of religious and state supremacy over the individual.

Sure. The West continuously placing time bombs in the Middle East by way of arbitrary map drawing, wasn't helpful at all.
