[Phoenix's voice comes on for the first time in well over two weeks. He sounds calm, vaguely curious, but definitely paying attention to the comm.]

If you had to catch a bird in flight, how would you go about doing so?

[His voice hardens.]

Maia.

Use a net.

[So helpful.]

Fair enough.

I know the layout well enough.

[He's mapped out every inch that's accessible to passengers. Thoroughly.]

There's a hidden settlement somewhere in the Brink - you do know what the Brink is, do you not?

I've heard of it.

[Kinda sorta.]

[Good enough.]

Then think where you would best hide a town or city in the Brink, then find me on the ship.

[He's on deck fifteen - a place with water and caves that remind him of the place Far Drop is hidden in.]

[What's that supposed to mean? Where are you supposed to hide a city at the supposed edge of the world--

Ah.

Over the edge.

...So where on this ship is like that? He can rule out residential decks quickly enough. Deck 13 and it's flowers, likewise. Deck 14's a maze, but not really edge of the world material. 16, 17, 18? All out.

In the end, it's process of elimination that leads him to Phoenix more than anything else. Finally, seeing the man face to face.]

You must be Phoenix.

[Unless you're not. Hope you are.]

[Phoenix is near the entrance of deck fifteen, so no, it wouldn't have taken Torn long at all to figure out that this was the deck Phoenix had been referring to. He's standing and waiting with his arms folded.]

Indeed. And I already know who you are, Torn. So tell me.

[He's watching the other man with a considering look.]

What issue do you have with Maia Acheron?

I don't like what she knows about Dark Eco.

[Because in his experience, people who mess with that are unstable at best and dangerous at worst, and with her, he's leaning toward the latter.]

Among other things. But that's the big one, there. Think it's a big point for you, too.

[Considering what Phoenix said to her about Dark Eco experimentation YES, TORN REALLY IS THIS MUCH OF A CREEPER.]

It's more than a matter of what she knows. [Grimly.] It's what she is and what she does, especially with Dark Eco. I anticipate a time when she'll need to be taken down - and thus the thrust of my questions.

[He can really only come to one conclusion after that.]

Is she like Jak?

[Bit of a leap, assuming Phoenix knows about Jak's transformations, but he's going to guess anyway. It's a small ship, and Jak's temper has never been the best.]

[Phoenix frowns and folds his arms, turning to look out over the water.]

I have yet to see her use any power beyond levitation, but the physical signs are unmistakable. I suspect she is merely biding her time and holding her cards to her chest.

[That's a yes.]

Jak at least knows that Dark Eco isn't to be toyed with lightly.

What kind of physical signs?

[Be nice to know what she looks like when she transforms.]

Jak, for all he's a stupid kid still, is a smart kid. There's a reason we like him where I'm from.

[Phoenix has no idea what she looks like when she transforms, or if she can transform at all beyond what she currently has. No, he's referring to what she looks like now.]

The gray cast to her skin and the lack of pigment in her hair are very classic symptoms of Dark Eco infection. Jak shows the same signs when he transforms.

[The same signs - and a whole lot more.

He snorts softly at Torn's backhanded compliment of Jak.]

I could do without the part of him that's still a "stupid kid."

[Jak shows the same when he transforms--that's an interesting connection to make]

You mean she's like that all the time?

...That's a problem.

[The only compliments Torn knows how to give are the backhanded ones. Maybe someday you'll get one, too, Phoenix.]

As far as I am aware, yes. I have yet to see her as anything else, except when Redd changed her age.

[Phoenix shakes his head grimly.]

A problem, yes. One I anticipate will become an even greater problem in the future. She may have some semblance of control of her actions now, but who can say how long that will last?
