Kunzite fell down onto a knee, gripping his middle tight to staunch the blood flow. The sound of his heartbeat was the only thing he could hear beyond the ringing in his ears. Thick black-red liquid slipped between his fingers to splatter upon the ground beneath him, and his sword shook with the effort it took simply to keep him from collapsing flat on his face.
Endymion. The Master. Jadeite.
Where? Where? Where?
The taste of copper infiltrated his mouth and he grimaced. Kunzite was no rookie; he knew his situation and made no pretenses at pretending otherwise. He'd known, somewhere in the back of his head, what he'd been doing as he did it. He was fulfilling the duty passed down upon his shoulders from his past life - his sword was the sword that protected his Master. That was what he'd said, wasn't it? When, now, had he become capable of becoming that man again? When had everything changed?
Was this penance?
Punishment?
Shaky fingers finally relinquished their desperate hold on the hilt of his weapon, and it clattered to the ground beside him, his body unable to support it's own weight. How had he been taken from Endymion's hands? Work of the witch? Pathetic, this. He wasn't even allowed to die with dignity. His jaw tightened at the thought; it hardly mattered now, did it?
Eyes rolled skyward as a trickle of red escaped the corner of his mouth. Adrenaline, flooding in an attempt to combat the trauma. Useless. A man had to accept death when it called for him. He'd already lived beyond his expiration date, meant to die a lifetime ago. Ghosts of the past didn't belong amongst the present.
