It hurt.
It hurt so badly. Mako felt like fire and Jenova felt like ice and Cloud (breathing sharply, and then not at all, and then sucking in the air like water) could feel the effect of her so close. He could feel his veins, he could feel his heart and his arteries all prettily ice over and it was so cold. His mind was freezing; ice was prodding his memories like sharpness. And on a cliff with the lonely sky above, Cloud had taken Zack’s bravery with him. But there was not enough stolen courage in him to stand the sensation of his consciousness freezing, becoming cold and delicate.
And so Cloud ran {“please, just . . . start running . . . . go, run now, Spike . . .” said a dying voice in his memories}. He ran out of Dor-Okto, his vision shifting and coloring and then disintegrating like a kaleidoscope. People were blurs of color and sound as he flew past him, and out into the commons, only the thought of escaping Jenova in his breaking mind. All he saw and felt was the freezing, the slowing and quickening of the past behind his blue eyes. He ran, bare feet barely touching the green grass of summer. The thought of escaping was not in him, there was just the need to [get away get away get away from the calamity from all of the destruction in your veins].
There was the wall, the tiny shining light in him vivid in his own fearful eyes. Cloud grabbed hold of it (you are made of glass and steel, break the barrier apart). But there was pain, a shock, and all Cloud saw was blackness (coursing through the universe).

When Cloud woke up (how much time had passed? there was no way to tell in unconsciousness), his head was still frozen and stinging, now, from the shock. He let out a hiss of pain, and tried to get to his feet. But they wouldn’t support him anymore. Cloud fell to his knees and looked at the Commons, vague shapes in the distance. He knelt there, in front of the wall, unable to stand, and wondered what was to ever become of him. (Weak and confused in the grass)
