Going hours at a time without seeing Jack had become part of her life now. After two years of complete separation spending any time with him had been nice, though difficult somehow. Maybe it was his attitude, his blatant refusal to make anything easy for her. But she had not minded that, not really, because she knew that it was not permanent. At some point, perseverance would see her with what she wanted ( ... )

Feeling the quiet movement of air behind him, too soft and calculated to be mere wind, and the presence that came with it, too natural and familiar to be anyone else, Jack stiffened slightly as though tense, but did not turn around. He didn't need to in order to know who it was.

There were no words for a while until he said to her, after grasping for something to say silently, "You really are irritatingly persistent, you know." He almost failed to continue until his mind jump-started, and words and thoughts started flowing again. "I was so blindly pissed off initially at losing the ability to keep up that appearance that I had almost forgotten to hold onto what I finally figured out."

What was there to say? Yuusei already knew that well enough -- that he was pissed, lost, angry, hurting, and so very confused. But injured pride is one of the hardest things to admit and, as violence begets violence, a brooding man inevitably begets even darker thoughts. Though there comes a time when the cycle has to be broken. Either that, or they fall into a place that is too far away to still be called human. That place, though, was only something she had seen in one man before.

Jack, she was sure, would not have gone there -- definitely not her Jack, the boy who had grown up beside her through all those times.

Lowering her head a bit against the lingering inclement weather, what she said was partially muffled by her jacket. "I am, and that's how I get things done." A pause, and she let her head fall back, her gaze suddenly filled by a bleary strip of distant, white-speckled black. "What did you find? Something that was close all along?"

"Somehow, in the midst of that scorn and misguidance... I had allowed you to get close again. So you could say that, yes ( ... )
