Fayt arrived first, and he was, quite surprisingly, in a good mood. He saluted as he stepped into the room. "Fayt Leingod, reporting for duty, sir."

Jing made a face. "You of all people should know that doesn't suit me," he said, poking Fayt.

"But you're doing a very good job," Fayt replied, suppressing a laugh. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his trousers. "I've got a fair share of updates myself, but let's wait until the others get here. We're making progress, though."

"Well, I'm trying. I think so many of us were frustrated by what happened to the old Alliance..." He trailed off, but was quick to add, "Nothing to do with you! Just the reactions to everything."

((Starting a new thread to kick off the discussions. Also, I'll be splitting my replies for now, but I'll put Maria, Fayt and Sheifa in the same tag eventually.))Maria stood in the middle of the room, and despite all the unease (and excitement) she'd been feeling concerning many things, she managed to stand there like a true leader, with no sign of discomfort whatsoever. Being the boss was natural for her, and meetings such as these? Piece of cake. "Alright," she started, and even her voice was cool and collected. She spared a glance at her PDA, in which she kept her report; it was a jumble of notes, but it would have to do. There was much she gathered that wasn't there anyway ( ... )

Padmé, who had arrived almost immediately after she'd read of this meeting on her PDA, listened intently to Maria's speech. She had to give the girl credit for her resources and despite the somewhat sour mood she was in at the moment, the dowager queen smiled a small, knowing sort of smile. An impressed, pleased smile. Luckily for Padmé, she was very easily able to shove her personal issues aside and focus on the task at hand, putting on one of her many political masks that a dear friend had once remarked as being part of her Amidala persona. As Amidala, she could be as cold and calculating as was sometimes needed in her line of work, but as just plain Padmé Naberrie, she could be herself. Few people saw that bright, happy and loving woman she really was. Especially in recent years after Anakin's fall to the Dark Side.

Going home...now that made her break out into an honest, all-out grin. Oh, how she beamed at this. Her world wasn't a pleasant one after Palpatine began his reign of terror with her husband at his side, but she ( ... )

"It sounds to me," Albel said speculatively, "that there's something about humans specifically that gives them an advantage. Which begs the question of why they bring some people here who are certainly not human - like Ying Fa's friend, the alchemist."

"I'm more interested in the 'this world and its variants' part. 's that mean people who don't come from Earth or some version of aren't as useful?" Nocturne asked.

"I think the Elrics are human," Jing piped up, having been perched on the corner of his couch, "but there are people here who are decided not. Really obviously not. So I don't think it's humans as an actual species that the Warden means. Maybe it's something we all have in common?"

Although those things must have been few and far between, other than basics like... speech, probably. And even that was iffy with some residents. Or sentience. At least everyone here was sentient.

But he definitely gave Albel's last sentence some deep thought. "That's... a good question. Plenty of people here are from some variant of this world, but many aren't, myself included."

"Hey, Jing."

The meeting had finished and everyone else had filed out, but Maria stayed behind, fumbling with her PDA and looking up something important. At least, that's how she wanted it to appear. In reality, however, what she wanted to speak to Jing about was another thing entirely.

"I was wondering..." she started, but then shook her head. "Oh, screw it." She cast one last look at the doorway just to make sure that everyone else had really left, before turning to the other once more. "Aligoté and I..." She hesitated. "... we've spoken. About, well, that. You know."

She winced inwardly. How intelligent.

"Oh?" Jing asked, for he'd wondered why Maria had been lingering back at others exited. He'd just assumed she wanted to talk to him about the new alliance. (They really needed a better way to refer to themselves as than that, though.)

"You did? That didn't take very long. That was why you got here after everyone, then?" The way he said it implied it was no big deal, but he was concerned to know how it went.

"And...?"

Too true. It wouldn't work to call themselves as just the new alliance, given all the implications for bearing such a name. But that was something they'd have to discuss later; there was something else that needed to be said.

Maria looked at him for a moment, then nodded slowly. "I needed to get that out of my head," she said, although it was clear that whatever happened still plagued her. Earlier she'd been all tough and commanding, but right now, the softer side of her was beginning to shine through the cracks in her facade.

"Sorry." That was all she had to say to Jing's last query.

Jing had been trying to conceal a hopeful sort of look, but at her words his eagerness dimmed a little. Perhaps he shouldn't have said anything about it after all...

"Well," he said after a moment, leaning against the couch again. He didn't want to sound accusatory or biased, but he was disappointed. "There's always next time, right?"

Which was actually a particularly ironic thing to say, given how people in Econtra were snatched away without warning -- sometimes even without them actually leaving. Econtra didn't allow for long goodbyes... it was too here and now.
