Toph had been in the middle of a bending form practice, moving through each step with slow deliberation. It had been a while since she'd actually done the proper steps -- so many of her own moves were adaptive to help her see at the same time as control the earth. Plus, she was using the repetition to give her something to focus on.

Too often lately her thoughts seemed jumbled and confusing. Even the new addition of the Warden in the compound hadn't been enough to actually prompt her to leave her room.

She barely paused at the knocking, considered briefly ignoring it, and knew that wouldn't work. She just didn't know what Zuko wanted her to say... it was like he kept looking for something, and as good at understanding people as Toph was, she was clueless here.

"Yeah, it's open," she said.

Zuko had to admit, he was a bit surprised to actually hear her voice answer his knocking summons. Usually, he could tell what she was about to say or do (or relatively close to it), but now, she was unpredictable, almost as if he'd lost touch with Toph as he'd previously known her. Though he knew her memories to have been restored to her, was she changed in some way by them? He didn't understand how such a thing could be possible, but he wasn't willing to negate such a theory right away. Not in this place; not after all the things he'd seen happen here and had experienced himself.

Grasping the handle, he turned it and stepped inside, pushing the door closed once he was inside.

"Champ?"
