Warnings: Shouldn't be any at all.
Helena wasn't doing a whole lot of thinking when she sent out that message to John over her PDA. It was a quick thing that she just did more out of curiousity than sense. John Preston was a gamble but now that the Joker was in jail she couldn't think of anyone who might be able to help her. She needed someone who wouldn't be afraid of hurting her. Other than the Joker she could think of no one better than a man who felt nothing at all.
Her theory was simple: if she believed she was in danger the Universe, or whatever force it was, also believed this and switched her to the world inside her art, a world where no one could find her. In her place the "Universe" would send The Princess. The Princess could protect herself, could kill if need be. Helena would not put it past her, that was certain. The only thing that bothered Helena was that The Princess was her only enemy and yet the "Universe" sent her to protect her place in the Universe, to make certain that she would always have a way back to the place that she came from.
However, it was not only this theory and the need to prove it true or false that drove her. It was the interest she had in John Preston. She had met people before who ignored their feelings, who put them off, but she had never met anyone who actually lacked the capability of having any feelings at all. And if he was from the future of her world she wanted to get as much information about it as possible.
She now waited in the church, sitting in a pew looking up into the starry night through the many holes in the ceiling, feeling the cool air on her face, staring at the dim light coming in from the shattered stain glass windows. She shivered in her long coat and jeans. The jeans let in too much air because they were a trifle bit bigger than her own size, looking quite baggy on her. She wore a long t-shirt that was actually the same pajama shirt she had entered this world in. The long coat she wore, however, was a grand token to her now. It was once The Doctor's coat. She had found it in his room after he... left. She held it close to her, snuggling in its warmth.
