Wufei had spent his time waiting for the Relena's arrival mentally reviewing what little he knew about the Vice Foreign Minister. They'd only interacted a few times over the months since their informal introduction at the conclusion of the hostage situation at the Cinq Kingdom castle. Though the other former Gundam pilots had spoken of her, he had preferred to form his own impression of her. That opinion was primarily composed of his observation of her diligent work at the task of ensuring peace would continue to grow and flourish among the colonies as well as on the Earth, and of Mariemaia's growing fondness for the woman ( ... )

Relena held back from flinching, as he stepped out and spoke up, having expected him to make himself known if he was indeed at the bank like he said--not that she had any reason to doubt him. From what she knew of the man from her coworkers and the other pilots, his word was to be trusted and she knew better than to assume that he was anything like his double. She, after all, was far from being anything like her own doppelgänger. The pilot Relena was more like Heero than she was like the person she shared a face with, something that no longer bothered the pacifist who would sooner sit through a neverending filibuster than get behind the controls of a mobile suit.

She'd gotten accustomed to being called many things while in this place: Princess, Miss Relena, just plain Relena, and a few other things that weren't worth mentioning. It was odd, however, hearing someone use her political title. She'd grown accustomed to not hearing it while in this place and it was surprisingly comforting to hear herself addressed as much again ( ... )

"Not for long," he said with a nod of respect as he moved closer, his dark eyes more on their surroundings than on her. It was perhaps paranoid of him, but he was becoming more and more aware that this place was nothing like it had at first seemed to him. First a Relena who was not Relena, and a Quatre who was not Quatre -- and now, this second Relena, who, in the way she moved and spoke and the things she had said earlier, gave every indication of being the true Vice Foreign Minister.

What was going to happen to the Earth Sphere with her disappearance? He was not conceited enough to believe that his position within the Preventers would cause any sort of breakdown in operations, but Relena's position and character was one of such enormous influence that it was possible that the tenuous peace the Preventers fought to protect could be broken to pieces in her absence.

If she died in this place, and was unable to return, those broken pieces might well burn to ashes.

What had his fellow former Gundam pilots been thinking, leaving her ( ... )

To say that his words surprised her would have been an understatement, for a moment, she merely stared at him, as if she expected him to add more after the question, but none came. Usually it was talk of her wandering around alone, at 'improper' hours and in areas that were shady and not to be trusted, not something that sounded akin to a compliment and a question about her knowledge of Neocontra. That alone instantly gained points with the politician who'd grown tired of being treated like a piece of thing, fragmented glass that could shatter at any moment.

"Yes," she said after a moment, snapping herself out of her thoughts. "I've been here several months. Almost seven."
