Through the dark she moved, one of her lighter scarfs pulled over head and covering it and the lamp. It was sheer enough to see through, but the night still obscured her vision as she traversed the alleyway. Fingertips of one hand stayed against the rough surface of the building she was passing between, Persephone moving slowly.

The sound of Jing's voice startled her out of her wandering. A bramble snapped out of the ground, scooping up the nearest object it could find -- a crumbling brick -- before hurling it at the man as she whipped around. The shawl she had been using to hide with fell about her shoulders and she stared into the dark, head held high, to face who was out there.

If there was anything that was going to incapacitate Persephone right now, anything to catch her off guard, a hug would be it. She was so utterly stunned that all she could do was stand there, looking over her shoulder in startled surprise at Jing.

Jing held the embrace for a few more seconds, then released her and stepped back a few paces. He figured that probably wouldn't go over well with the angry goddess, but it had seemed like a good thing at the time.

"You'll need it," he said softly. "Later, anyway. But there might not be anyone left if you have your way, and I didn't want you to go without."

Persephone didn't say a word. She looked at him with that same startled expression, though there was something else behind it -- sorrow? Grief?

The goddess waved a hand dismissively, turning her head away from and walking down the alley like a ghost, her skirt leaving a trail in the snow.
