Baltha had felt the rush of magic as she walked into the plaza - not as strongly as she would have had it been her world's magick, but noticeable nonetheless. She strode over to the green-skinned woman who seemed to be the source of the energy. "Quite a spell."

Baltha had always been contrary, and she tended to revert to that when angry. She turned away huffily. "I'm not here to tell children bedtime stories." This statement was made under the impression that Elphaba was simply an oddly-pigmented human rather than another species entirely.

"I suppose you would want me to apologize, now that I've horribly offended you." Elphaba almost hissed the words, syllables pliant and slipping against each other with annoyance. "But I don't apologize, and I certainly don't apologize to someone who's taken all my words, jumbled them together like some sort of tik-tok mess of metal bits and gears, and constructed from them a rude form of device that somehow has managed to hurt their feelings."

The strong, angular features were poised and clear, the brown eyes flashing. "Do you think I haven't had enough of pity, when I don't get disgust or revulsion? I turn peoples' stomachs on a regular basis, I don't expect them to pat me on the back for it, or give an ear to my sorry story." Elphaba's earthy gaze was unmerciful. "I certainly wasn't seeking sympathy or compassion when I said those words against pursuing lost causes." She spoke the two words with such vile disgust that she almost seemed ready to be sick ( ... )

Baltha stiffened suddenly at the mention of "my father." Grudgingly, and very quietly, she said, "I'm sorry."
