rainy day

while the rain streaks the windows, i sit here with a mug of my beloved Market Spice tea.  the sweet spicy flavor and warmth is the perfect counterbalance to the wet chill outside.  it's the kind of day that calls for tea, flannel blankets, and a book.  by a fire would be nice.  it could even be a day for tea, flannel PJs, and writing, but that ( Read more... )

I recommend reading Catcher in the Rye if you liked The Outsiders. They are nothing alike, but leave me with the same bittersweet smile on my face.

The Chocolate War is good as hell and I'm shocked you haven't read Lord of the Flies. It isn't the best thing ever, but all sorts of satire will suddenly make sense.

Any recommendations for me?

thank you for the recs! you know, it always amazes me that i made it through high school without reading Catcher in the Rye, and i've been wondering about the Chocolate War. i've never really wanted to read Lord of the Flies, so i may skip it. i'll try for the others, though. : )

The Handmaid's Tale was really good. dystopian but not depressing. of course, Fahrenheit 451 is great. and Beloved is good if a little disturbing.

Of course I can only comment on the books I've read... I've read luckily a half dozen of the books you've not read from the list, but my top recommendations would be:

The Catcher in the Rye - I really think this is a theme that is uniquely American-- so much emphasis is put on our purpose and our ambitions and goals that maybe we are missing out on who we are now while we're preparing to be someone else. I think a lot of people can't accept it, but it's ok sometimes to be a drifter, to be purposeless. All of us are a little Holden Caulfield at times. *cannot believe that would be banned*

The Lord of the Flies - This was a blow-me-away book that actually started my interest ing English literature and writing the human condition. Under the surface we're all made up of the same sets of instincts. I think everyone takes something very different from this book, but what I took from it was profound for me-- to be on guard against those parts of my humanity that are simply natural, living under the veneer of society, but also very ( ... )

thanks for your input. looks like The Catcher in the Rye is a definite. and since you're the second person to recommend, The Lord of the Flies, i'll put it on backup. i've never really wanted to read it, but i'll try it if i have time.

Oooh...rainy days! I'm excited and slightly trepidatious to see how I deal with a quasi-Winter this year, since I'm in a new place. I'm kind of excited about it.

Here in Oaktown it is sunny today, with a slight chill to the air (not too bad - only from the ocean).

L'Étranger is really nice. E took me there once. Yum.

If you're having car troubles, I can always come over, or we can reschedule. I don't want it to be a bother!

As for books, The Giver is awesomness. One of the only books I read in school that I LOVED. It's amazing. READ IT.
