The Chocolate War is good as hell and I'm shocked you haven't read Lord of the Flies. It isn't the best thing ever, but all sorts of satire will suddenly make sense.

The Handmaid's Tale was really good. dystopian but not depressing. of course, Fahrenheit 451 is great. and Beloved is good if a little disturbing.

The Catcher in the Rye - I really think this is a theme that is uniquely American-- so much emphasis is put on our purpose and our ambitions and goals that maybe we are missing out on who we are now while we're preparing to be someone else. I think a lot of people can't accept it, but it's ok sometimes to be a drifter, to be purposeless. All of us are a little Holden Caulfield at times. *cannot believe that would be banned*
The Lord of the Flies - This was a blow-me-away book that actually started my interest ing English literature and writing the human condition. Under the surface we're all made up of the same sets of instincts.
