Darkly Dreaming Dexter was released in 2004, and instantly became a hit.  Batman Began again the following year, making Warner Brothers another mountain of money.  Dexter hit cable TV in 2006, and that's when I knew for sure that something had started swimming around in our collective unconscious.  Why else would we suddenly be ( Read more... )

This isn't the first time. In the 1930s, radio dramas and pulps spawned men who stalked evil in men's shape. The Shadow knew the darkness that lurked in the hearts of men and fought that darkness with guns and subtle magicks. The first Batman was closer to this than the campy cartoon you remember from your childhood. He was a killer, and Christian Bale has just put his mask back on.

Something happened, though. Maybe it wasn't strong enough to endure the shifts the War caused. Maybe the other two put it down.
