Have developed a red spot under the strap for my neoprene sleep brace, which hurts like hell and is hot to the touch. Suspect I inherited more than just my aunt's love of classic hairstyling.

I would suggest to stop wearing the brace and keep an eye on the spot. If it continues to get worse, wash with warm water and soap (like dish soap. Degreasing) to remove volatile oils, and then put on some cocoa butter or some other non irritating moisturizer. :hugs:

Hi-ho! I am the neoprene sensitive aunty in question. I have apparently had this issue all my life, but did not discover the allergen til I was in my thirties. (Took a scuba course and had a "Why are you still breathing with an allergic reaction this bad?" moment in the local ER..) I react to the volatile oils in neoprene that are the difference that makes neoprene oil resistant. The reaction is akin to the common reaction to poison ivy, and the basic first aid and treatments are similar. Washing with oil stripping soap as soon.as you are aware of th exposure, drinkinglots of water over time to flush..and corticosteroids if necessary, but I do my best to avoid that bit of insanity.

Thanks. Yeah, That horrible reaction was nearly 20 years ago, and apparently I am "parts per million" allergic to that plasticizer/volatile oil It is also in "Armor All". At the time the reaction was horrific, but at least from that I found out what I was actually allergic to. Since it takes some time to develop, like poison ivy, and neoprene is very common, I don't think I would have ever figured it out any other way..
