[Almost as soon as the words the Operator pass her lips, Alex slams his hand down on the button to open the feed. He's in too much haste to even lock it.]

No. NO. Do not ask for him. Just don't!

[He looks like he's seen a ghost, and he sounds like a parent who's just caught their kid with a spoon and a big bowl of antifreeze.]

[With EMPHASIS! The fact that she's being evasive is - well, he guesses he can sort of distantly get why she's not jumping for joy at the idea, but that's just because she doesn't understand.]

[She closes her eyes for a moment, opening them again to an unpleasantly clear vision of frantically changing tapes at night. On the one hand she finds it hard, too hard to believe that his memory loss isn't just a protection mechanism of sorts, but on the other hand she's seen Markus and she's seen the Operator and downright dismissing the possibility that Alex is right would be unreasonable, given the circumstances.

Fine. Fine. She can go about this in a more sensible way. Now she just has to hope her reply doesn't sound as forced as it really is.]

Okay, good.

[He sounds just a little bit relieved. He'd prefer her to be happy about this, but so long as she's safe from the Operator, it doesn't matter as much that she's not wildly enthusiastic. Hell, he hates the setup, but he's grown accustomed to it, and it's helped him.]

For your room, you'll want camcorders with built-in HDDs - uh, hard disc drives. They can record for ages. [Guess who recently upgraded his collection? This guy!] But they don't like being shaken around, so when you're moving around you'll want memory cards. About three and a half gigabytes'll last you three hours, with a bit of a cushion just in case.

[She gets up and steps away from the feed. Rooms look like you want them to and if she suddenly wanted something else, surely that could be arranged? She focuses, recalling the decor of Rapture.

Soon parts of the walls seem to melt on all sides, shifting, growing and finally forming into four security cameras.

The whirring and clicking of their movement is not something she looks forward to getting used to, but she would much rather do this her way.]

Thank you, Alex, but I think I would be more comfortable with the equipment we have at home-

[She tilts the camera so that Alex can take a look at her security equipment.]

[Please don't tell me it's not. Please don't tell me this memory card is needed to make sure the memories are really not forgotten. Please just say it'll do.]

[He blinks at the noisy security cameras. That is some old-fashioned-looking hardware, right there. Oh yeah, there's that thing where you can't get stuff you hadn't heard of before - she probably can't grab state-of-the-art camcorders, then. That had slipped his mind. That might be a problem.]

Can you get to the - tapes? I'm guessing those record to tape? And you'll need to be able to play them back if you lose any time.

[Don't give my cameras that look. In Rapture we knew how to shoot bees from our arms before you were even born. We can handle our surveillance.]

The cameras will sound an alarm if they detect an enemy and yes, I will be able to access the recorded material.

[He didn't ask for the alarm, but she hopes that the extra features will make him feel better about her system.]

[Yeah, that's a definite sense of relief on this side of the feed. The alarm is a nice touch!]

What about portable cameras?

[Portable. Right. She holds her finger up and disappears from view again. In the back you can hear the quiet sound of a closet being opened, followed by the not so quiet sound of a metallic clank. There's silence, a whirr, a bleep and a security bot flying into view.]

We normally use those as flying guns, if you will, but they do transmit to the security system also.

[Is... is that made from an outboard motor and an apple box?!]

Looks good. You'll have both hands free as well.

[A gun... has not really worked out for him, although maybe his marksmanship is just terrible. It can't hurt to have one. And if the helicopter thingy is autonomous, then, he thinks, it might even stand a chance of distracting the Operator if he shows up, and give her a better chance of getting away.]

The gun... might help. Don't rely on it, though.

[Is that a problem? Are you discriminating against outboard motors and apple boxes? She really only has one hand available in the first place, you know. More importantly-]

I have no intentions on using the guns, Alex.

[Violence bad, remember? But anyway-]

[Not even in the face of certain floodling? Alex isn't going to demand that she rethink her whole moral code, but he does hope that she'll use the guns if it'll save her. He really doesn't see the appeal of pacifism where the Operator is concerned.

He wracks his brains, going through the other bits of information she might need.]

Anything you'll need to remember on the spot, that you don't want to have to go through tapes for, write it down somewhere you're gonna see it.

[The lights... she doesn't need to worry about keeping the lights out. That started as a practical way to see out of the windows at night and morphed into a sort of vaguely comforting habit. Light picks you out. Darkness is a blanket.]

And stay away from the forest. That's his place.
