So this is the result of me being very tired and what inspiration can do in about an hour, not really edited, did a basic spell check, will probably edit it tomorrow when i'm more awake, have a read and tell me what you think. I'm happy for criticism and welcome it with open arms. Doesn't have a title and i suggest before reading this you go to the link at the end of the story so it makes sense.
EDIT (14/02/08): Right, finally got down to editing, still not over the moon about it, but meh, my first peice of real writing in a long time, i think i need a second opinion on this because i've never been a real good at guaging my own writing, has something to do with my low-self esteem coupling with my inner perfectionist that i rarely let out of its box.
At least, until the bundle in Donna’s arms began to cry.
The Doctor looks up at it sharply, then looks back at Rose. “What’s that there?” A rising suspicion fills him as he watches his Rose’s beloved face change from relief to fear once more.
“Doctor, its slimy.” Donna said in that penetrating voice of hers, currently holding deep tones of disgust. The Doctor’s suspicions deepened.
“Rose.” He said warningly. She looked up at him with those eyes. Deep and brown, he could never forget those beautiful eyes. She had used them on him just when she was going to say something particularly damaging. He sighed heavily. “I’m not going to like this am I?” She shook her head slowly, he could see the tiny laugh in her eyes. Good, she still had a sense of humour under strain. He’d always loved that about her.
“I’m sorry,” She started, “I’m so sorry.” He knew really wasn’t going to like this as the cry from the bundle grew in intensity.
“Rassilon! What the hell are you doing with a Madraki pod?” It was all he could ask, though there were a couple of other questions that were burning to be raised.
“What’s this then?” Donna asked, breaking the eye contact between the two, a look of unveiled revulsion filling her face. The Doctor drew breath with a long-suffering look on his face.
“It’s a Madraki pod, from the planet Yldis 5.” Rose cut in, the Doctor shut his mouth like a trap as she gave him a pointed look. “They’re home to a full colony of Madrak and they can tear apart anything within a ten mile radius.”
“Think of them as the Yldis version of locusts.” The Doctor said seriously. “Locusts that can eat through anything and everything, mind you. Which brings me to the next question, why are you pressing that Pod onto my hapless companion here? And why don't you want me to know you're here?” He didn’t mean to be cold, but seeing her hurt, it hurt far more than he could’ve imagined. Anytime he had dared to even dream they would be reunited, this was not the scene he had pictured. It had involved hugging and happiness, not her trying to run from him.
“I can’t stay, I gotta go.” Rose was pleading with him, a hurt look in her lovely eyes. She kept on throwing glances over his shoulder, making it apparent that she was being followed. “I gotta go, or else they’ll catch up. You gotta take that and run Doctor, take it back to Yldis, throw it in a sun, just get it off the planet or we’re all doomed. Just don’t let them get to you, they’ll know you’ve seen me and that would be even worse than the Earth being destroyed.” With a final squeeze she left him looking stunned and with the words. “I’ll find you again.” And with that, Rose Tyler, his impossible woman was gone once more.
“Doctor?” Donna was still holding the pod wrapped in cloth. “Doctor, shouldn’t we be moving like she said?” He stared blankly at the place where Rose had disappeared from sight. Had it all been a dream? “DOC-TOR!!” Donna’s voice cut through the stupor, he moved his gaze and spotted her livid expression.
“Back to the TARDIS then!” He said as if nothing had happened, he took Donna’s spare hand and broke into a run. Hands don’t fit right, a small voice in his head piped up. Hush, I’m concentrating. They were in the TARDIS and he flew around the console, pressing buttons seemingly at random. He swivelled the screen to face him and read the information the TARDIS was feeding him, before smashing the ever-handy mallet onto the broken button. They began to dematerialise. Weren’t you supposed to fix that three weeks ago? The voice was there again. Who are you, my mother? He asked indignantly, while he realised with a sinking feeling that he was going mad. First Rose and now the voice. Oh, don’t be silly, I’m not your mother and you’re not going mad, honestly, I can be such an idiot sometimes. Before he could reply to his little internal voice, Donna cut through his thoughts.
“Is this thing going to eat me?!?!”
“Sheesh, no reason to yell, and no it won’t not yet. When the sonic frequency reaches about, say somewhere around 35 kHz. After you can no longer hear it, we’ve got a ten minute count down till everything gets eaten. Handy warning time really, well except when you come across an apparently silent one that’s reaching its higher decibels anyway. Rather amazing isn’t it, they use the vibrations from the sound waves to actually break their pod before the millions of Madrak spores burst out, see they have to all vibrate the shell at exactly the same frequency and time in order to break it, the fully grown Madrak lays the pod and its meant to be unbreakable so that the Golrin, main predators of the Madrak, can’t get to them. Once they’ve eaten everything they then settle and begin to grow using all the energy they’ve gained, and they mature into full Madrak, lay the pods and then the Golrin relieve them of their lives. Now the Golrin…” He was rambling, he knew it, but the words wouldn't stop, couldn't stop. He couldn't think and the sound of his own voice droning on was helping him drive some very loudvoices in his head demanding answers.
“DOCTOR! Please, for the love of god, shut up!” Donna had quite obviously lost her head again. She kept on doing that and he idly wondered if the Earth sayings were true, that all read heads had explosive tempers and if he was going to turn out like Donna, he wasn’t so sure that he wanted to be ginger anymore. The point was, he did not want to get on her bad side.
“Shutting up.”
They rematerialised on Yldis 5, the sound of the pod had now reached past their hearing capacity. The Doctor appeared with pink ear muffs covering his ears, effectively protecting his ears from the harmful power of the sound frequency. He threw the pod as far from the TARDIS as possible and snapped back inside quickly. He ran again to the console and just set the course to empty space, no time for exact coordinates. They only had a few more seconds until they were a Madrak snack. They dematerialised with a few seconds to spare and the Doctor removed his ear muffs, though he instantly regretted it.
“YOU BLOODY IDIOT! THAT, THAT, THAT THING COULD’VE KILLED US! What was your stupid girlfriend thinkin’ givin’ that bleeding thing to me?” The Doctor noted that Donna was quite skilful at throwing her voice across the room, she probably would’ve been a good stage actor, excepting the whole no talent thing.
“We’re safe aren’t we? Isn’t that what counts?” He asked defensively, he always felt defensive with Donna. She looked rather akin to a steaming bull, he could almost picture the steam coming out of her ears. She stopped pretty quickly as a thought hit her, the Doctor saw the wheels turning in her head and knew exactly what the next question would be. He instantly back away from it. Sometimes you’re such a big coward.
“So ‘ho was she?”
“Rose.” He wasn’t all that surprised to hear the clog in his voice, so much emotion, so many thoughts, so many dreams attached to one single word, to one single person. He finally allowed his mind to think back to her, what was she runing from? Was she safe?
Oh god, oh god, ohgodohgodohgodohgod. Rose’s mind was scattered as she ran, vaguely aware that there were tears running down her cheeks. She struggled to stay ahead of those that were chasing after her. Years of running from things that could potentially kill her had kept her in peak condition. Even in the parallel universe she had been kept on her toes, but that was the way she liked it best. But presently, Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth was hating the necessity of running away from where she wanted to be the most in the all the universes, parallel and otherwise. She needing something to mask her scent, the Stiad she was running from had a very keen sense of smell and the perfume she had used before she crossed universes was like a beacon to it. Where’s a vat of sludge or garbage when you need it?
She kicked in a door forcing every ounce she had into it. Thank god or whoever that she was in London, she knew this area like the back of her hand. She was now into the back area of a large shopping mall. She kept on running until she reached the main forum of the shopping center and scanned the general area, casting her mind back three years to remember exactly where that perfume store was. It clicked and she ran to the left, past the pet store, then the Food Courts…Aha! She pulled out her skeleton key, it wasn’t quite a sonic screwdriver, but it’d have to do. A few seconds later she was in and she was picking up large amounts of perfume, several of different kinds, choosing the cheaper brands. She backed out of the store and smashed a blue bottle, red bottle and green bottle in the center, making sure that none of it splattered onto her. She ran along a few meters and then threw another three, she dashed up the stairs and back tracked along her path, taking the lids of the perfume desperately and began to pour the variations along her path. Her false trail having being made she fled at full speed, making her way for the main entrance.
Once she had put distance between her and the perfume shop she fiddled with a packet of one of the more expensive ones, spraying it all over her as she made for the ground floor of the building. She tried to hold in the coughs that the perfume induced and placed the bottle in her pocket for safe keeping. She slipped out her key once more and unlocked the front doors and the roller door that covered it, locking it once she was done. She looked around for a place to rest before she headed back to the Stiad base. She wasn’t even in the universe where it was her job and she was still protecting the earth from destruction. She guessed travelling with the Doctor did that to you. ….The Doctor…. Oh god, she had just left the Doctor standing there, maybe he thought she didn’t want to come back, she bit her lip, maybe he didn’t want her back. Maybe when he was cut off at Bad Wolf Bay he was really trying to say, ‘Rose Tyler…. Where’d you put the banana’s?’ She honestly wouldn’t put it past him. She wandered the streets of London, trying to shake the look of the Doctor when she had first turned around. She had to think of a way to stop the Stiad and send them back home, she was fairly sure that he had taken care of the pod. Her mind then switched back to Donna, the woman who was currently travelling with the doctor, he had replaced her, just the same as he had all the others, and she was just another face amongst the crowd… No she had to stop this. Pushing her rising jealousy aside she turned her thoughts back to the task at hand. Think, Rose, think! Where’d all her concentration and determination from Torchwood go? Ah, that was right, she had left it behind when she had whirled around to face the Doctor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rose's brainwave had hit a dead end. The Stiad would be back from hunting her soon and she hadn't got enough time to finish rigging up their comm system. She hit the console in a flash of anger. "Dammit, i need more time!" She paused for a moment, "That or a sonic screwdriver."
"Here." A voice said handing her one.
"Thanks." She said urning back to her work as she grabbed a couple of wires. It hit her like a tonne of bricks as she felt him kneel beside her.
"So what are you trying to do here?"
"Christ Doctor, you shouldn't be here, if the Stiad find you..."
"Ooohh... so its the Stiad behind this, shoulda realised from the abundance of carcasses hanging around. Not really my first choice of decoration, but then again, each to their own." He was rambling agin, she missed that.
"Please Doctor, i'm trying to concerntrate." She cast a quick look around. "Where's the red head?"
"Getting someone for me, but that aside... Oooh i get it! Rose Tyler, you're a genius." He paused for the briefest of seconds. "But if you're trying to do what i think, maybe you should let me take care of it."
"Why's that Doctor?" She said holding back her irritation, only he could insult her in the same breath as a compliment.
"Because if you do that, the place will really explode."
"Who said that wasn't intended?" She shot him a challenging look. "Now you got a couple of options Doctor: One, you can shut up and let me finish, Two, you can leave here before they sniff you out and Three, you can tell me which setting on this blasted thing can solder these wires together because, for the life of me, i can't remember."
The Doctor meekly took the sonic scredriver from her hands and switched the settings. He gave her a kicked puppy look, he probably knew she couldn't resist and she smiled at him widely, her tounge peeking out from between her teeth once more.
"Thankyou Doctor."
They finished their adjustments not a moment too soon as the Stiad came into their dank little nest, dejected from their unsuccessful hunt. They hid together behind the console and the Doctor made to take back his screwdriver, Rose shook her head and mouthed 'I need it.' She then moved close enough to the Doctor that he found it rather hard to breathe, he felt her hands brush up against his arms as she went to pull something from her pocket. She breathed softly into his ear.
"when you hear the sonic screwdriver go, start the system." She drew back and the Doctor felt strangely empty as the warmth that was Rose Tyler moved away. Before he could register she was up from behind the console and facing the Stiad.
"Hello there, looking for me?" She said in a light breezy voice. The Stiad began to fling several curses at her.
"Now, now, that's not a very nice thing to say." He heard her shift and then heard the sharp intake of breath that followed.
"How is it not active?" One of the creatures bit out, the Doctor was having trouble seeing around the console.
"What? You thought you could just waltz on down to Earth and it wouldn't be defended?" Rose wasn't sounding like Rose, she was rather sounding a bit like, well....him.
"But humans are undeveloped race.." The Stiad was cut off by Rose's derisve laughter.
"Not all of us. Now to your previous question, i have it held in stasis by this wonderful little device here. I offer you an ultimatum, you leave here now and live, or i activate this little pod here and we all get eaten. Up to you really."
"But that is suicide, Earth-woman."
"Well, beats living under your rule."
"All we want is the one called the Doctor."
"And I already told you, i can't do that, I can't let you take the Doctor. So what's it gonna be?" He heard the shifting of a large foot, they were gearing to attack her.
"Fine." She said simply and she activated the screwdriver and the Doctor started up the system.
“Rose Tyler, the Defender of the Earth!” Rose heard the oh-so-familiar voice cry out as he moved from his hiding place and her heart soared. As she turned to face him with a huge grin on her face he deactivated the system.
"Couldn't have done it better myself," He said with a grin a mile wide, "now, with that out of the way..."
She gave something akin to a squeal, breaking him off and ran up and hugged him with all the force she could manage. After a while she pulled back with tears in her eyes.
“Hello.” She said softly as she gave him a sad smile. “You miss me?” She felt herself engulfed in another hug and was rather surprised to feel a dampness running down her cheek.
“More than you could imagine.” His voice was low and soft.
“Oh god I missed you.” She felt her tears begin to fall. He pulled back and held her out at an arms length.
“Pooh, you smell.” He said finally realising that she smelt like she had tipped the entire contents of a potpuri factory all over her. She gave the smile he loved the most from between her tears.
“I had to throw off the Stiad somehow.” He grinned from ear to ear.
“Rose Tyler, you brilliant young woman, taking down the Staid with a sound recording.” There was an insurmountable amount of pride in his voice as he regarded her.
“Had your title to live up to now, didn’t I?” She was feeding on the sight of him, three years spent away from that smile, she was hit by how much she had missed him. Three years of loneliness and misery, never feeling like she fit, but still trying so hard to live, becasue its what he would've wanted. In a way it all felt so surreal, but of course, they had to have faced the risk of alien invasion when they were reunited, universal fact. A bone crushing hug followed soon after.
“Rose Tyler….” He was going to say it, after all this time he was going to say the words that had been stolen by time.
“DOCTOR!” A familiar and irritating American voice cut him off at the crucial point and the Doctor found himself wondering how many times it would take for him to get bored of killing the good Captain.
“Jack?” It was Rose who answered and the Captain stood there, a small group behind him, in shcok.
“”Rose?” His whisper carried to them, disbelief written on his features.
“It can’t be!” They both said at once.
“You’re alive!” Rose said in astonishment.
“You’re here!” He said in equal amounts of shock.
“How?” Again coupled together.
“Yeah, that’d be interestin’ to learn now, wouldn’t it?” Donna said with her arms folded, a little tired of being ignored.
“How about we all go back to Torchwood and discuss this all?” Said a young black haired woman.
“Yeah, good idea Gwen.” Jack agreed surveying the mess of carcasses the Stiad left in the warehouse that once held their nest.
The room looked intently at Rose, all eyes trained on her. Once upon a time, this might of freaked his Rose out, but here she was, calm and collected. She must have done a lot of addressing people in a room, all looking at her for an explanation. The answer he had been waiting for was finally coming and he looked at her along with the rest. The Doctor was very sure that he had exhausted every possibility to get Rose back and found nothing, yet here she was, in the flesh.
“Honestly? It was a mistake.” She flashed a glance at him, he almost fell of his chair.
“What?!?”
“I was workin’ on a teleport that we found on a crashed ship in Kent with my team an’ Mickey. We had finally got it connected up to the power source again, which by the way was a potato.”
“How’d you find that one out then?” Donna asked a little bemused.
“We took samples from the terminals an’ we found trace elements of a potato, we were rather surprised, but then again, you can make potato clocks, so why not potato teleports? Anyway, I was supportin’ the stand while Mickey was fixin’ the control panel, we were aiming to get it to teleport a tennis ball to the other side of the room, but there was a flash an’ I think Mickey got it wrong cos ‘ere I am. Ended up in Cardiff, just by the Rift and decided to make my way to London. Knew it was my Earth ‘cos there wasn’t any zeppelins floatin’ around. I didn’t know what else to do so I just made my way for London, its home so I thought that would be the best place to head. I couldn’t believe it that I had got ‘ere.”
"So how'd you find out about the Stiad?" Jack asked. Rose responded with a shrug and a small smile, her tounge poking through and she looked straight at the Doctor.
"Me? I'm jeopardy-friendly."
Sitting back in the TARDIS in silence the Doctor was brooding. An accident? An accident brought his Rose back, after him searching every timeline, every inch of the universe for some way to get her back and she ended up back in the universe thanks to a potato fuelled teleport and the faulty wiring abilities of one Mickey Smith. He felt a soft touch on his shoulder. He knew it was Rose, for one if it was Donna, she would've said something about how pathetic he was for moping about instead of enjoying the fact that "his Rose" was back. He couldn't help it, he had a professional prdie at stake.
"Hey, what you thinkin' 'bout?"
"I can't believe it, Mickey the Idiot brings you back here by mistake when me, in all my brilliance couldn't even fathom a way to bring you back." He headr her heavy sigh.
"Is that all?" She said with exsasperation. The Doctor then turned to face her, his ball of pink and yellow, looking at him with the same weary exsasperation as a mother would regard a small child who just did something incredibly stupid, but incredibly endearing and it melted away. He cracked into a soft grin and grabbed her hand, which she took with an answering smile.
"Now, I believe we were in the middle of something." A said softly with a mischevious glint in his eyes. Rose found her self raising an eyebrow.
"And what would that be?" He stood up and pulled her closer.
"Rose Tyler.."
"Doctor, have you seen.."
"DONNA IF YOU DON"T TURN AROUND AND WALK AWAY RIGHT NOW, I'M GOING TO KICK YOU INTO THE NEAREST BLACK HOLE!" He said not looking once away from the blonde woman before him. He distantly heard Donna muttering as she turned back down the corridor. "Any other interruptions?" He asked the TARDIS and there was a faint snicker in his mind. "Well then, i'm going to say this very quickly before something else happens. I love you." The Doctor looked directly into Rose's eyes with complete adoration.
"Well, its about sodding time." She said as she grabbed the lapel of his jacket and brought him close, pressing her lips firmly onto his. Several thoughts flitted quickly through his head simultaneously before rushing out once more. This is so much better when she isn't being controlled by a bitchy trampoline. Shut up and enjoy the ride.
