rini1031 I'm so sorry for the wait. It took me forever just to get this written, and I'm still not sure I'm happy with it. Oh well, the next chapters will be easier/better. (And hopefully quicker, although that's what I said last time...)

Speed knew he needed to focus - or at least look like it - on his current case, but there were too many other things he needed to take care of, things that were far more important than the case. The most pressing matter was that he needed to talk to Eric, but it looked like that would have to wait. Horatio approached him, his face set in determination, and ‘requested’ that he join him in his office.

“I know what you’re going to ask, H, and no, of course I didn’t steal that evidence or kill that man,” Speed said as soon as they made it to Horatio’s office and closed the door. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I swear I didn’t do it.”

Horatio gave him a small smile. “I wasn’t going to ask that, but thank you for the reassurance.”

“Oh. Well, what were you going to ask?” Speed didn’t really have time for this, but he figured he might as well humor his lover - after all, Horatio was also his boss.

“Nothing. I just wanted to make sure you’re alright,” Horatio conceded. They rarely got time alone anymore, and although he’d never been one for displaying his affection for all the world to see, he couldn’t help wanting to pull Speed into his arms and never let go. He settled for resting a friendly hand on Speed’s shoulder.

Speed waited patiently as Horatio talked, although he wasn’t paying much attention to what was being said. Every minute he spent with Horatio made him want to stay longer, but he knew he couldn’t. He was there for a reason, and no matter how much he wanted it, the reason wasn’t to spend time with Horatio. The hand on his shoulder was doing nothing to help get him back on track. It only served to remind him of just how long it had been since they were together.

“What about tonight?” Horatio asked, forcing Speed to wonder just how long he’d been tuning the older man out.

He was saved from answering though when his phone rang. He answered it quickly, talked for a few seconds and hung up. “Sorry H, it’s about the case.”

“We’ll talk later,” Horatio replied with an understanding nod.

Speed left Horatio’s office trying not to appear as rushed as he felt. He only had a few minutes left to do what he needed before it was too late. It was a dirty trick manipulating his phone to go off like that, but he didn’t have time to worry about it right then. If he’d stayed with Horatio any longer, he wouldn’t have enough time to do his job.

He was in luck though, because just as he headed into the lab area, he spotted Eric talking to Calleigh in the layout room. Making his way there (still trying to appear calm and collected), he focused his mind on what he’d need to do as soon as he got Eric alone. There was no time for mistakes or useless chatter.

“Eric!” he called out as soon as Delko was in hearing range. “Come with me for a minute.”

Eric, who probably wasn’t doing anything important anyway, looked up with a frown. “What is it Speed?”

“I need to talk to you, come on.” Speed led him to a secluded corner of the lab, Eric following very reluctantly.

“What in the world are you up to?” Eric was getting frustrated, and a frustrated Eric meant an angry Eric. It was probably best to get this over as quickly as possible.

“I’m sending you back.”

“Back where?”

“Just trust me on this, Eric. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and clear your mind.”

Eric didn’t see the point; he really just wanted to get back to work. He was getting ready to tell Speed as much, but Speed cut him off.

“Eric seriously, just trust me. The sooner you do this, the sooner you’ll get back to work.” It was a lie, but Eric didn’t need to know that.

Eric sighed, relenting, and closed his eyes, doing as Speed told him. Speed placed a hand on his shoulder, and suddenly, Eric felt as if he was floating and falling at the same time. He became aware of a dull pain in his head, but forced himself to keep his eyes closed.
