My friend Steph likes Janeway best, too, because she was obviously a competent engineer before becoming a commanding officer. None of the others ever exhibited a "pre-command" talent set to much extent. (Yes, there were a couple of episodes where Picard took the helm, but I don't remember Sisko ever flying a ship, nor Kirk, nor Archer.)

A commanding officer, however, who "leads with the whip" is one who is not, IMNSHO, fit to command. (Though at least he kept his fly zipped, unlike Captain Kirk...)

Oh, he rarely led that way, but he sure as heck negotiated that way on a number of occasions. Probably just as bad, overall, but damn, it was fun to watch.

Of course, it was fun to watch. Just that no one should ever think that it was an example of good leadership on his part.
(And yes, of the Star Trek TV shows, I did actually like DS9 - though I liked TNG better. I didn't watch that much of VOYAGER after the first season or so, and I didn't watch much of ENTERPRISE at all consistently ... they STARTED with a time-travel theme, after all...)
It's tough for me. I love Picard's personality. Out of all of them, I would most want to serve under him. But yeah, Sisko was the most entertaining to watch. I think a large part of that was that DS9 as a whole seemed more relevant and real to me. The situations, lifestyles, & choices of the people in that series comes closest to my rl experiences. Therefore, Sisko's abilities in dealing with them were more interesting to me.
I think "Deep Space Nine" was easily the best-written of all of the series. It had its bad moments (Enamarian, anyone? Or Tosc? :-P), but it really was the best of the five, and the ending felt more like a true ending than any of the others' did (well, that is, either of the others that had a real ending).
I remember how upset they were with Babylon 5 coming out around the same time, and they played around with some season-spanning story arcs, but ultimately they realized they these were two entirely different kinds of shows...
Very, very different. And each wonderful in their own way. I think the highs were higher in B5, but the lows were also lower. DS9 was consistently good, whereas B5 was good on average, but was occasionally brilliant and occasionally dumb.
