ConJecture: Lemme sum up...

EDIT: I would like to officially apologize to Ms. Masterson and Mr. Sawyer for calling them assholes. It was inappropriate and out of line.

Friday: Actual performances all went well. Unfortunately, the excitement of the evening was dampened by the drama storm that Chase Masterson and Robert Sawyer (yes, the Guests of Honor) threw. It's too bad, ( Read more... )

Dare I ask what the drama storm was about?

Chase was shoehorned into the concert as a performer at the last minute, and she basically divaed all over the place, and Robert bullied the sound man into not confronting her on it. Basically, they were being assholes.

"Bullied the sound man into not confronting her on it." That's simply untrue, Eben. And I do wish you would tell the whole truth, rather than lies. Why are you leaving out the key fact that you had special needs -- friends you wanted to have see the concert who were limited in how late they could stay -- that you had disclosed to no one? The whole problem would have been avoided if you had gone on first, at 8:30 -- why didn't you request that slot? Why did you manufacture a situation in which a crisis (for you, if for no one else) would result if even a slight delay occurred. Chase was super-accommodating of everyone and everything all weekend long (as was I, I daresay). Why did you not step up when I and others in the audience called for another performer to go on when the first performer finished his set? I shake my head in wonder.

What, wait a minute, Mr. Sawyer. Your characterization of the event in question is entirely in opposition to mine and to everyone else's to whom I spoke on that evening.

When Chase was so late that she in fact missed her entire set, Barney said that Allison should at that time take the stage, and that if Chase should show up later she could play the set after Allison. You (and this situation can be corroborated by everyone in the audience) then, indeed, bullied Barney into not allowing this to happen. Your exact words were "you can't make an unilateral decision". The first act then had to vamp for an additional ten to fifteen minutes until Chase arrived, which then made everyone else's set much later.

As for "not speaking up" about people who couldn't stay ... I certainly would have had I known about it ahead of time, but I didn't. Allison, who had a panel to go to, did bring up her time constraints, which were acknowledged by everyone--except, apparently, you when you prevented her from taking the time slot she was assigned by your ( ... )

Sorry man. Sounds like overall weekend suckage.

If it makes you feel better, I'll avoid both authors' books in the future (as I haven't heard of them prior to this, no hardship!).

But again, sorry for the stress. Hopefully, all will be well.

Enh, with the awesomeness of the con panels to set off the asshole celebrities and the ants, it was kind of a wash. Not overall sucky, neither overall great. Just ... enh.

Risking that this comment may be deleted in short order, I'm throwing in my 2 cents. Having been at Conjecture myself, and having witnessed these events firsthand, I must say that this is one of the most preposterous, deliberately misleading mischaracterizations of an event that I have ever read. It would be humorous if the repercussions were not so serious ( ... )

My goodness, Eben, it was a small con, and if you had a beef with me you would have had no trouble finding me at all and talking to me in person about it. It's cowardly of you to call me names here instead of talking like a gentleman when you had the chance. James Kerwin has outlined the facts -- just as he did to you, I'm told, at the con when you rudely accosted Chase. I was on hand when Chase tried to do her sound check and was blithely dismissed; I sat at dinner waiting for close to an hour for her to return while she was patiently (she has the patience of a saint) off trying get it done ( ... )

And you are wrong, wrong, wrong, Eben, to say that Chase was shoehorned into the concert at the last minute. She was booked to perform back on September 1, 2010 -- more than a month before the con began. Indeed, she was promised a *solo concert*, and graciously agreed to do a reduced set to accommodate other performers -- and was only informed of that change the day before (Thursday). Your accusations are baseless, uninformed, rude, and do you no credit.

If she was promised a solo concert which then was changed at the last minute, that is certainly a disservice that was done to her. However, as she was not originally scheduled to be a part of our performance, I stand by my statement. We were given a schedule weeks ahead of time, which had to later be altered by the cancellation of the Goliards on account of one of the members having cancer. Even so, as of the week before, we knew our schedule and were planning for it. Then, as you say, the day before, we were given a new one.

In and of itself, that wouldn't have been a problem. If Ms. Masterson (and you) had acted graciously and treated everyone around her (and you) with courtesy and respect, there would have been absolutely no issue at all. Unfortunately, as I outlined to James in my reply to his comments, that was not in fact the case.

I am truly sorry that events shaped up the way they did, but you and Ms. Masterson did, in fact, have a certain level of control over them, even if that was only in how you handled yourselves under
