After looking at all of the answers that say "we can get married, vote, fight in a war etc. so we should be able to drink too!", it is nice to see this post. It's true! I at least think we should be able to drink BEFORE we're able to drive. Germany is set up that way and their stats are significantly lower. I don't know why no one thinks about this.

I suppose that makes sense... you learn to handle your alcohol before you get behind the wheel.

I'm with you on that. It probably will not surprise you that we largely agree on these social and lifestyle issues.

Why, no it doesn't. In fact, the reason I was a registered Libertarian in the early '90's was because of social and lifestyle issues. ;-)

Possibly, but I'm not sure I entirely agree. It's worth looking into, though, I suppose.

Agreed. I don't think there should be a legal age to *drink*, although I have no objection to a legal age to *buy*... which should be 18, at the very latest. Or we could follow Germany's model - buy beer (I'd add other malt beverages and cider) at 16, drive and buy hard liquor at 18.

That's one way to go about it. I still like Italy's idea though....
