Hi ESP! I think those sand craters are the work of the ant lion.

Yes Antlion larva pits they are indeed. Thanks for this. I think I will do a follow up post on these nasty looking chaps!

Gasp! Oh now you've done it, bad mouthed the Tremors movie. One of the greatest movies of all time, the others being the sequels. I've seen them all numerous times. Of course my wife thinks I've lost my mind. Giant worms, gun fire, explosions, blood and guts. Every thing that makes up a good movie ( ... )

I get the craters too (around the shumard oak), but I don't know what they are either.

P.S. I always thought the Laurel seed pods looked like cat poop. Gorgeous trees though.

Hi Katina.
The craters are from ant lion larvae (see above comments). I plan to do a post on them soon.
Interesting on the Laurel seed pods!!! Definitely would not want to string that around my neck!
