Zatanna shrugged. Had he seen his shoulders lately? A girl had to take her advantages where she could get them. "What's on here that you don't want me to see?" she asked instead, flipping the phone back and forth between her hands. She looked up at him, eyebrow raised. "Are you going to tell me or am I going to have to get rough with you?"
Behind the mask, she could almost see his eyebrows shoot up and his eyes turn flirty. "But Zee, you know that I like that."
You go, Zatanna.
I really like the dynamic and the banter between them, and how Zatanna helps Dick relax.
The elderly woman smiled indulgently at him. "Of course, dear," she said. "Young love. I remember it well."
Zatanna bit her lip, hard, and looked away.
Ouch. Now I'm really curious if Zatanna doesn't quite love Dick or thinks he doesn't feel that deeply for her.

My head canon for them (which is stolen from other people on my flist and then twisted) is more or less that they dated, knew that it was potentially too serious a thing for how young they were, broke up and remained friends/fwb (as is clearly canon), and at some point in the future they will try again. So it's not really a matter of either of them not knowing the other loves them, but that that is a thing they very deliberately DO. NOT. TALK. ABOUT.
Does that make sense? It might not make sense.

I mean, headcanon is headcanon, so I'm not trying to talk you out of yours, but for me, personally, that sounds a bit too functional and optimistic for Dick Grayson. (Remember, this is a dude that was raised by Batman.) Like, I buy him not getting into a relationship with Zatanna because it would get too serious (and then hurt too much when one of them died) but him trusting that someday they will HAVE a chance to try again... just seems too hopeful for him.
Zatanna, on the other hand, I can see trusting that there will be a future when they're older... not as much Dick.

1) Earth-16 Dick Grayson, I feel, and this is all general impression based given that I don't read comics, is a more together emotional dude than other Dick Graysons. This is this kid, who at 13 said "I don't want to be THE Batman" and MEANT it. So I don't entirely agree with your take.
and 2) Based on what I do know of his actual comics history, the guy actually does have a history of long-term romantic entanglements, so it just doesn't feel that out of the realm of possibility for me? After all, I'm not saying they'll definitely get another chance. Life is unpredictable that way. It's just that they COULD, and that they want to.
